I bought this map and the world puzzle for the boys christmas this past year and he just loves it!!!! He has become a master of the states and their capitals at the age of 5! This world puzzle is a bit harder but he's begining to understand just how big our state is and how it fits into the big picture of our world. I have shown him where his Auntie lives in Australia and the country in Africa where is father's family lives. We're working on my friend in Wales now. Too bad I don't know anyone South America!! I can't say enough amazing and great things about what Doug and Melissa's toys do for my (or anyone's) child. No matter the age, buy this for your son, daughter, grandchild.....heck buy it for a friends kid!Customer Review: Fine Geography Learning Tool for pre-schoolers

Like so many M&D puzzles, this one holds a child's interest, with the nice added benefit of being educational. Parents may find it education too--how many of us remember that South Dakota's capital is Pierre or Missouri's is Jefferson City? While the rote sound of the electronic voice that says, "California, capital Sacramento," is a bit grating, there is some hilarity to be had when your child starts saying, "Florida, capital Tallahassee" and "Hawaii, capital Honolulu" over and over. Coupled with other USA maps, this can be a fine learning tool.Customer Review: Great idea, bad execution

Here's what I don't like about this toy -
1. The state boundaries are not the piece boundary. Meaning, you could have a black "state boundary" line running in the middle of a piece.
2. Some pieces straddle 2 states or more.
3. If your child accidentally touch a piece placed (which is common with a jigsaw), it will say the name of that state. Too sensitive; which renders the sound feature useless.
I like most M&D toys, but this one is really frustrating because the idea was great, the execution was horrible.

I'm not hearing music, animals, vehicles, letters, numbers or more, as in the product description on this webpage, only the state names and capitals. On the manufacturer's website

they say: "As each piece is placed correctly in the puzzle board, your child will...hear the names of the states and capitals!" So the description on this amazon page is just wrong.
We haven't had the puzzle long enough for me to comment on durability. Everything else seems fine so far, but I expected a much better toy.

I got this for my 5 year old twins for their birthday. Both boys are fans of puzzles and they have enjoyed playing with it. It appears to be sturdy. The only drawback is that its optical sensors are too sensitive and it says the name of states when your hand is just passing over a sensor on the way to put a piece in its spot. For example, when you are putting Texas in, it was "Florida, capital, Tallahassee" because your hand passes over Florida on the way to Texas. But, knowing this, I don't think it would deter me from buying it.
