Customer Review: great train set for the $, a few construction issues

My son absolutely LOVES his wooden train sets (he started with the 2 starter sets {Thomas the Tank Engine and Imaginarium}) so we wanted to add to his collection and looked into many expansion sets before deciding on this set. for many reasons we love this set: first of all, this set is a great set for the cost!!! and is compatible with his other train sets. Secondly, we love that this set comes with so many actual train tracks pieces and structures, other sets were mostly trees and signs. The quality and quantity of items that come with this set is amazing and we would definately purchase this set again.
But with that said, there are a few construction issues that when compared to other sets; this wooden train set is slightly inferior. First the bridge is not the best design, no matter how you try to support it (we gave up using their wooden supports and use the Imaginarium plastic supports instead)the bridge consistantly collapses. Secondly the wooden supports, don't stay in place and cause the train tracks to fall off, so we no longer use them and just place the majority of the track on the floor; using the wooden supports more for blocks than anything else.
Besides the bridge and supports, I am extremely pleased with this wooden train set and would definately recommend it to others!

My parents got this train set for my daughter's 2nd birthday. She loves trains, and was very excited to play with it! The quality is high, my friends have a Thomas set and I think this is just as good (and has a lot more pieces for the $$). She's a little too young to totally appreciate it yet, is more interested in just moving the train around the track than building anything, and she's too rough with it for the bridges or elevated pieces. But I just set up a very basic track she could play with now, and as she gets older we can build more elaborate sets.
I like that it comes with 4 different set-ups. The elevated track pieces are awesome, but are a bit difficult to set up as far as putting the bridge pieces in the right spot (have to be under the junction). I didn't have any problems with pieces not fitting together well, when the track was together it was very sturdy. My daughter is just too interested in taking it apart and knocking things down to spend too much time putting an elaborate track together right now (we set up the one on the box, it took about 1/2 an hour, and it took her 30 seconds to tear apart). But it's a perfect set to grow with her!

I purchased Melissa and Doug Deluxe Wooden Railway set for my grandson Teddy for Christmas. We opened my gifts to the grandchildren at my house after church on Christmas eve. Teddy is not two yet. He absolutely loves his train set. When they got ready to go home they boxed the train set and put it in their living room across from the tree. When my son heard Teddy saying very quietly " Daddy, please help me, Daddy come? My son Daniel, thought his son was awake and in the new Christmas presents, as it was only 6:00 am. Daniel went to their living room and found teddy lying on top of the Train set box. He look up and said, Daddy, my train-- I need my train. He had not even noticed the new presents under the tree. It was his train set he wanted. So, before the others were up, Teddy and Daniel put the train tracks, bridge and the rest of the set together. There they were, both smiling and playing with the train when Sarah, Daniels wife and Grace, their daughter got up. The train engine went to the table for Christmas Breakfast. Biggest positives: No Batteries, No annoying sounds, should last forever unless your dog takes a liking to the tasty wooden track pieces, the standard wooden train set Thomas and other engines work on this as well. Negatives: There are a couple track pieces that are annoying because they are in limited # and always in the wrong male to male or female to female orientation when you are throwing a layout together, and sometimes it seems the measurement of some pieces are off because you end up with a really tight fit on certain pieces.
But overall your 3.5+ yr old is going to really like this toy. If you have a kid that is a comatose rock and doesn't get flustered, then maybe a slightly younger kid would like it. We just got rid of the elevated track/bridge pieces for now and will get them out when pieces constantly toppling over doesn't cause meltdowns.
Track does need about a 3' x 5' hard surface to lay it out. I ended up building an oak play table for this. Track was $65 when I bought it and I think we've definitely gotten our moneys worth out of it, and I am sure the kid it gets passed on to will as well.

I bought this for my Grandson's 3rd birthday and he plays with it constantly. Before receiving it I kept second guessing whether I should have bought the Thomas track, but after receving it, I have no regrets at all. The track itself is every bit as good as the Thomas track and the train station and trains are at least decent. My recommendation is to buy this set and eventually add some of the Thomas trains, stations, and bridges. As is mentioned in other reviews, if you plan on building 2nd level tracks, make sure you buy the Suretrack clips to keep the joined pieces of track together, otherwise you will find yourself and child becoming extreamly frustrated with the track falling apart every time it moves. I took things one step further and nailed/stapled a Suretrack piece to each wood block riser. Now I can literally drag the 2nd story track assembly around and it stays perfectly in place. Also, I don't know what the other reviewer's complaint was about the track geometry being off. I'm an engineer and would have noticed something like this, but didn't. This is truely a great train set!
