Customer Review: Don't waste your money

My wife and I have a two-year-old grand daughter. We both had fond memories of the "pound-a-peg" type toy from our own childhoods and bought this model recently. We have bought other Melissa and Doug items in the past and have generally been pleased with the quality. We were both incredibly disappointed by this piece of junk. I shudder to think what the "Non-Deluxe" version is like!
1) It is far too small and the pegs too close together to hit individual pegs.
2) The head of the hammer is likewise too small (but this is a minor complaint)
3) the main problem is the pegs DO NOT FIT TIGHTLY IN THE HOLES--they wiggle and fall out on their own!
Okay, this is for a two to three year old, but I mean is it THAT difficult to get the tolerances right such that the friction will hold them? I still remember the one I had as a child (in the 60's) and you really had to whack those pegs hard to get them to move. It was work--it was a challenge. You really felt like you had accomplished something when you flipped it over to start again. Now they use some sort of rubberized plastic ring inset in the hole which is supposed to hold the pegs, but it fails miserably. This plastic ring won't last long and we were looking for something that she could use now and perhaps even pass down.
It's not even worth donating to the Salvation Army--we threw it right in the trash and I will make her one of her own. I'll even have her help me make it so she learns a valuable lesson about QUALITY and CRAFTSMANSHIP.
This is NOT a complicated toy. Very disappointed.
