This set is of very good quality, has a good selection of effects, and a very good price. There are a couple GREAT effects (Magic coin box for one), and a couple silly ones (cylinder squeeze for one), and the rest are good and entirely kid-appropriate. The instructions could use some improvement on how to present the effects, not just how they work. I bought this for my 5 1/2 year old, and she can do all but "magic number prediction" (requires math) and "disappearing ball" (requires greater dexterity) convincingly after limited practice. It helps her think,use her imagination, and develop self confidence through presentations.Customer Review: the most played with gift

I bought this set for my 8 year old daughter. She had expressed a desire for such and had circled many cheap versions in toy catalogs for Christmas. After researching many kits, reading advice to buy or not to buy kits, I chose this Melissa and Doug Deluxe Magic set. It is just beautiful! It was one of the most played with items during all of Christmas week. Not just for her but for her 5 siblings as well... all older than her btw. The instructions were easy for her to follow on all but one trick. After gentle prompting from an older brother, she got it. We all enjoy her "shows". I am more than pleased with this purchase.Customer Review: He liked it!

This magic kit was purchased for my 8-year old Grandson's birthday. Since has just about everything, including all of the electronic gadgets..it's pretty hard to find him a gift that would be different. He has a very good imagination so I thought it would be fun to give him a magic set. When I went on Amazon, this particular set was highly rated, so I went with that.
My Grandson thought it was really cool. Together we learned two tricks to present to his mom and dad when they came home from shopping. It was different and he really like it! The quality of the set was very good considering the price.

I bought this magic kit for my son, who is almost 6 years old. He's probably a bit too young for this (he feels the need to explain how he does each trick), but it is a great magic set. I got it because it was made of real wood, appeared well made, and looked better than those kits that have "400 tricks" and are made of cheap plastic. I was pleasantly surprised: the tricks actually work and everything does look and feel pretty good (e.g., hankerchiefs that feel like real silk). I'd recommend it for 7 and up. It's one of those gifts that was actually as good as I hoped it would be, and my son really enjoys it.Customer Review: Great fun!

We first bought this set a year ago as a birthday present for a friend's child. Ever since then, my daughter has wanted it. She finally got it, and it has exceeded expectations. The tricks are durable and easy to manipulate (for an 8-year-old). The paintings on the tricks are also very cool--old-fashioned and spooky looking.
I would recommend buying a general book on how to be a magician with it. Although detailed instructions for the tricks are provided with the set, there is no information on the other aspects of magic, such as sleight-of-hand and how to direct the audience's attention elsewhere.
