Toys and Games Reviews of Melissa & Doug Deluxe Magic SetCustomer Review: A disappointment Summary: 2 Stars
My son (age 9) ordered this with his own money after playing with one that his friend had. Melissa and Doug stuff we've bought in the past has always been so nice... but the quality on this is set just isn't there. I have to give Melissa and Doug credit... their customer service is friendly and helpful. They sent two replacement 'magic change bags' (for the secret silks magic trick, the main reason my son ordered the set) for the problem one that we received originally. The second one they sent didn't work, either... the third one is also a dud... even though they said they'd try it before shipping it to be sure it's ok. The trick lever is extremely hard to maneuver, even for me... it jams and is impossible to move... my son couldn't do it without making it completely obvious. To make matters worse, you could totally see the metal arm moving inside the bag (there's about a half inch exposed... and the arms are misshapen so they snag up the bag when you move them) We ordered the Empire Magic Change Bag Trick with Zipper from Amazon and while it isn't much to look at (the handle is heavy duty cardboard, not wood like this set has)... it was only $7 and it works so much better! The rest of the tricks with the set are ok I guess, I'd say overall it was a disappointing purchase.
Customer Review: Lots of tricks in a nice package! Summary: 5 Stars
Our son was given this for Christmas, and he IMMEDIATELY started learning the tricks. He is 7, and there are a few that require some more mature "finessing," but as he grows he will do better with those. Some tricks require good math skills, but all will help a child with hand-eye coordination, as well as experience the fun of performing and crafting a "stage personality." Grown-ups will likely have to read the tricks with the child the first time to be sure the actions are understood, but once the child learns them, like my son, they will likely not forget how and can than perfect the trick. The only problem with this toy? The beautiful box it comes in does not have a latch, so if you are fortunate enough to get everything back inside (hint: make a diagram as you open it for the first time - we didn't), it easily falls back out if you don't carry the box closed with two hands. But we have added a latch and cover for the hole, and it's still an awesome toy! Quality wood, fabric and painting - and no batteries! The way toys should be...
Customer Review: Fun, cool & durable...what more do you need? Summary: 5 Stars
My son wanted a magic set to replace an old junky one he had gotten a couple years ago. Most of the old set was broken or lost. We saw this set online. From my previous experiences with Melissa and Doug items I had hoped it would be of the same nice quality I came to expect. I am pleased to say it is!! This set is really cool in looks AND in its functionality, and durability. My 9 year old son really likes it, says its much cooler than his other plastic set, and has been mastering all the tricks (all very do-able for a kid 8+). The tricks are for kids to master as they are pretty obvious for adults to figure out. But I think it is also educational in that a lot of magic is a bit of science...and he is learning a bit of showmanship as well as he performs these tricks for people. I highly recommend this set...it comes with plenty of start up items to make a kid interested in magic quite happy, and the durability of most all the items will make the parent happy too!
Customer Review: Fun durable entertaining magic set Summary: 5 Stars
My 12 year old got this set for Christmas this year. He's wanted a magic set for a while now, and I've never looked into getting him one because I thought they'd all be cheesy and cheap and not hold up. I finally looked at some online and read some reviews and decided to try this one. We put it on his wish list and his grandma got it for him. He's since put on several shows for family and has entertained us all. Each time he's gotten better at his presentation. The quality of the set has really impressed me. Most items are solidly made and the "tricks" are fairly easy to learn, but still impressive (there were a few where he needed us to help him out, but he's got them all figured out now). Everything fits perfectly in the sturdy box - we just added a big rubber band to keep it shut. My son is so thrilled with this set that he's already looking to expand his collection!
Customer Review: Well-made and fun Summary: 4 Stars
There's a lot to like about this set - the tricks are fun and there is a nice variety. I got this for my 9-year-old son. We both liked that it was made out of wood and that the components can be stored inside the presentation box. A few of the tricks are self-explanatory and my son was doing them within minutes. For the rest, we read the instructions. There is still one trick that we still don't understand how to do based on how they are explained in the booklet. I think there could be some improvement there. Video clips of someone doing the tricks so we can see how they're supposed to work would be even better. Also, I think a bit of showmanship is needed to pull of some of these tricks and not every child may have this (mine doesn't!). That's not a flaw of the set, of course! Maybe he'll develop that a bit more after a few more family gatherings.
