Toys and Games Reviews of Melissa & Doug Deluxe Latches Board

Customer Review: Good concept, dangerous for little fingers
Summary: 3 Stars

I bought this for my 17 month old so that she could start developing her fine motor skills. She is obsessed with the mechanics of the seat belt buckles, clasps, locks, etc... so when I found this, I thought it would be perfect and would keep her busy and intrigued. The first two latches are pretty tough to undo (even I have a hard time) and I'm afraid she might pinch her fingers. Because of the difficulties with the latches, she pretty much has no interests with the board. She likes opening the doors and seeing what's behind them, but that only occupies her for about 5 minutes and she losses interests. A good concept, but disappointed with the execution.

Customer Review: It could have been made better
Summary: 3 Stars

My Grandson loves this, only problems were the rounded part on the latch on the lower right popped right off. It is plastic and painted with brass paint and the perfect choking size. I think if it had been made of metal it wouldn't have popped off so easy. The other latch that everyone is saying is difficult is the other problem. It really is difficult to use so we will have to figure something out on that. We will also have to find a way to get that plastic piece to stay on and it will be a toy we won't let him play with alone since that one piece popped off so easy then maybe other pieces will too.

Customer Review: Not nearly as fun as the defunct M&D box with latches
Summary: 3 Stars

I bought this because my 11 month old son had so much fun playing at a playdate with a Melissa & Doug toy that's no longer made apparently as I can't find it - a box with doors with these same variety of latches. It really engaged him for a long while. Unfortunately although this latches board is cute my son just isn't all that interested in it. He found it interesting for like 5 minutes. Disappointing. I guess it will be good for developing fine motor skills, at which he's already advanced, but I don't see this toy engaging him for long play periods. Just short stints here and there.

Customer Review: 2nd Child and still like new
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this for my daughter when she was about 2 1/2. She enjoyed figuring out how to open all the latches and we had fun together talking about the animals, colors, and counting. She has played with the toy off and on for almost 2 years now. My son is 19 months old and discovered it in his sister's room several months ago. He dragged it out to the family room and has played with it nearly every day. He loves opening and closing the doors and trying to figure out the latches. The toy seems to be extremely durable as both kids have fought over it and dropped it and it still looks like new.

Customer Review: Not well made
Summary: 3 Stars

My 15 month-old son is fairly advanced with his fine motor skills and likes to put keys in locks, work with buttons, etc., so I bought him the Latches Board. He does enjoy it! He chuckles when he is able to open or close some of the latches. My main complaint is that the product is NOT WELL MADE. One of the latches (blue top middle) does not even work because it was constructed so poorly. Another latch (purple top left) is so "tight" I can barely work it and it is impossible for a younger child. Melissa & Doug need to contact their manufacturer and demand some quality control.
