Melissa & Doug Nesting and Stacking Blocks are colorful and creatively designed to be more than "a is for apple." Although they are recommended for ages 24 months and up, these are definitely suitable for younger children. The vivid, eye-catching designs are unusual and so much fun. For example, there is a bear with boots, a cow with cake, a horse wearting a hat, etc - these unusual pictures allow an adult to make up silly stories to explain the picture associated with each letter. The different pictures help, as you explain each one, increase your little one's vocabulary. You the adult may not tire, as quickly as you might if the pictures were more typical of alphabet toys, of telling stories to accompany the illustrations.
These blocks are made of cardboard which results in their being lighter than plastic or wooden blocks might be. This is a real plus for little ones - the blocks are easier to lift and don't cause damage when toppled over. Our grandson delighted in playing Godzilla when someone stacked all ten blocks up - if one was fast enough to get them all stacked. He also enjoyed nesting the blocks - and in tossing them about. Fortunately, since the blocks are light in weight nothing and no one was ever damaged. Of course, if your child is teething, these blocks are apt to get a few teeth marks or have a bit of paper gnawed off. Additionally, they come with a storage box that is no larger than the biggest block. The nested blocks are compact and contained;this really helps when you need to tidy up the room.
