Customer Review: What is it about these things that's so addictive for kids?

I have a very active, very boy-ish 5 year old boy, and he can't get enough of the Melissa and Doug food toys. Maybe it's because he watches me cook and he knows he's not allowed to touch the sharp knives, and "cutting" this food lets him be a big boy and experience what I won't let him do? Whatever it is, he and his friends -- ranging in age from 1 to 11 -- love to put these things together, "slice" them up, serve them on plates, "eat" them, put them in toy pots and pans and "cook" them in his play kitchen, etc. Not cheap, but an incredible value for a toy with lasting appeal. And I like that the food is healthful food, and the toy encourages imaginative play. Highly recommended.Customer Review: Creative fun

My daughter received this as a third birthday present and few of her toys have got as much playtime! She loves to chop the food, make salads and pretend to cook. Our eighteen month old is similarly enchanted, one of her ongoing missions is to pull all the food apart and carry it around in the box.
The construction is solid and durable. The pieces are beautifully painted and despite nine months of being gummed and played with daily have not even chipped. I don't know how but even the Velcro tabs that hold the pieces together are as good as new.
I highly recommend this for anyone looking for a beautiful, high quality, stimulating toy!

Every child who has entered our house to visit has sat down and played with this cutting toy. Without fail, they have seemed happy and engaged for a long period of time. With a satisfying snap, the little food pieces fall apart and can be served to hungry playmates. Even the yougest of children (ages 1-3) can be helped to coordinate the cutting by guiding their little hands helping to improve their coordination and offering them the satisfaction that they can slice everything up and then place all the segments back together again. Providing practice with an adult skill is highly rewarding. The quality is excellent and the details and wood finish great.Customer Review: Great Toy!

I'll keep this short since there are so many other reviews. We just gave this to our two year old for her birthday. It says for three years plus, but she's had the cheap cutting plastic food and we wanted to upgrade. The plastic doesn't last long with little kids, it gets stepped on and broken pretty easily. My daughter got this at her birthday party and was a hit with the kids from then on. It's always in the middle of the living room floor because someone is always playing with it. Some of the paint was already on the cutting board after the first night, but that's not a surprise after reading the other reviews. I was so excited to see these at our Play Group - after finding nothing but milkshakes and cheeseburgers and ice cream cone clones at the store, finally some healthy play food! All the kids at Play Group love this set, and I know my daughter will be very excited to get it as a gift. It's very well made, sturdy and rich-looking, as others have said. No cardboard to rip, plastic to dent or flimsy metal to break and scratch little fingers.
Cutting the "carrots" and "cucumber" has made my daughter want to eat more vegetables at dinner, and she's also learning how to hold and use a knife safely! Great set, great quality and great price.
