Toys and Games Reviews of Melissa & Doug Cutting Food BoxCustomer Review: Many educational, fun uses!!!! Summary: 5 Stars
My two and a half year old son works with an early childhood intervention specialist due to some speech delays, and a very paranoid mommy :) She brought this set of food to play with today and he LOVED it! My son is very much the little man of the house, and is very much into trucks, cars, crashing into things and generally being a rough and tumble kind of kid. I was really surprised to see how much he enjoyed cutting everything and putting it back together over and over and over again. These can be used to help teach colors, shapes, food names, numbers (how many peices?) and are excellent for fine motor skills. I love Melissa and Doug toys and love that they offer lifetime part replacement, check out their puzzles too, we love them!
Customer Review: Does NOT come with two knives/cutting boards Summary: 5 Stars
I just want to say that this product does NOT come with two knives and two cutting boards like one of the featured reviews indicated. That review was written in 2002 and maybe it came with two then but it doesn't now. This is a significant con for me.
That been said, my sons ages 18 months old and 3 years old both love this toy. Wonderful idea! My older son loves to "help" me in the kitchen and sometimes I just don't have time to let him. The food cutting box is just what I needed. He cuts his veggies while I cut mine and I can actually get dinner cooked. It makes cooking dinner quality time for us since I'm not stressing out because I'm not getting done what I need to do. Anything that improves the mood gets my vote.
Customer Review: Great for kids of all ages! Summary: 5 Stars
I ordered this toy for my granddaughter who was celebrating her 4th birthday. It was obvious her 9 year old brother liked it as well, as he was slicing and dicing with it before she even had a chance to finish opening her other gifts. Three weeks later and it is still their favorite toy to play with together. My grandkids are always wanting to help out in the kitchen when I'm cooking and this toy gives them the opportunity to practice their technique on one of the things I won't let them do yet. I highly recommend this toy and feel that the Melissa & Doug collection of toys will be a favorite of children for years to come. Since ordering this set, I have ordered two more different sets and they were a hit as well.
Customer Review: Super fun, durable, better quality than plastic play food Summary: 5 Stars
This is a great set that comes with fruit and veggies cut into slices and held together with velcro, dull wooden knives and a little cutting board. It comes in a wooden box with a plastic top that can be used to store the pieces when not in use. The kids love the cutting action and playing with them when they are assembled and whole. My only caution is to be somewhat diligent with keeping these together as a set or else they may scatter throughout the house (as happened with us). My kids got frustrated when they wanted a whole piece of food and they could only find half. Also great from this company is the new wood pizza which has pieces to "slice" and little wood toppings to construct a custom made pizza pie.
Customer Review: Bigger than you think - and bigger is better Summary: 5 Stars
We love this toy. It is sometimes with her playroom kitchen, and sometimes in my real kitchen. The little crate it comes in is very cute, but we keep the pieces in a shoe box with a lid, because sometimes my 2 year old shakes it in transit. I also have a 2 month old, and I'm planning on taking the carrot out of the set when the baby starts crawling, because it could be a choking hazard, but the other than that it should be fine. My 2 year old loves cutting the pieces, and says she's "yust yike momma" when she has them out.
I gave 4 stars for educational, but it could have been 5, because I like that, besides working on motor skills, all of the food is healthy, and so it's emphasizing good food choices.
