Toys and Games Reviews of Melissa & Doug Cutting Food BoxCustomer Review: Great toy! Perfect for your little chef! Summary: 5 Stars
There are so many positive reviews on this toy that I had to get it for my daughter. Well, they were right. This toy amused her more than the $175 kitchen did!
She "cut" the items over and over again and made me all kinds of stuff...banana bread, soup, chili. It really inspired her imagination and made her feel like such a big kid. I had a good time hearing the CRUNCH of the wooden knife going through the velcro.
This is definitely a classic toy. No batteries needed, educational, spurs conversations about healthy eating, etc. If the other 80+ positive reviews haven't convinced you to buy this toy yet, JUST DO IT! It is worth the money and won't be a toy that winds up tossed in the big toy bin two weeks later like goofy electronic toys.
This is a simple, old-fashioned toy that inspires the child to use their imagination. It is worth it for sure!
Customer Review: Great for dexterity and pretend play! Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this for my one year old daughter and I'm quite pleased with it so far. She has some plastic play food and I don't like how flimsy it is. This is much more durable, and she loves to take it apart and put it back together. And also bang the pieces against each other and on things, but hey, she is only one!
My only complaint so far is that the velcro is that the pieces fit so tightly together that is is actually difficult to get the knife in there and 'cut' the pieces apart. I imagine that will be less of an issue as she plays with it more, and as she gets older. Right now she just pulls them apart, rather than using the knife.
I couldn't give five stars for durability because some of the paint has rubbed from one piece to another, leaving a red streak on the cutting board. Hopefully that was a fluke and not something that will continue.
Customer Review: Brilliant toy, love M&D Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this for our 19-month-old son who loves to watch us cook and says, "hold knife" (which, of course, we can't let him do). We bought the M&D pantry and fridge products as the first foods for the play kitchen he got at Christmas, but should have bought this. This is a great set for "cutting up" foods and putting into M&D pots and pans "to cook." If you can't tell, pieces are velcroed together. The velcro seems very securely fastened. It's so clever the way the knife works to "cut" the food. He loves it--although cutting some food is easier than cutting others for him (cutting the baguette is easy; the tomato, not so much--he's only 19 months!). One piece of the white bread did split in two with the grain of the wood (I was really surprised; it seemed so durable), but I called M&D and they replaced it without any hassle. The Customer Service there is great.
Customer Review: Fun toy for 3-year-old Summary: 4 Stars
This toy is quite nice. My son got it for his third birthday and has been playing with it a lot. It's neat that it actually makes a noise that sounds like cutting a vegetable because you have to slice through the velcro. I will say that it's a little hard for him to cut the tomato because it's kind of small and hard to hold while cutting it. And he hasn't quite figured out how to put them all back together. It's kind of a puzzle, too! I have a friend who has had them for a while, and she says her paint is chipping off and starting to look pretty bad. And it seems like the velcro could wear out pretty easily. It wouldn't be that bad to glue more velcro circles on it, but I think it would be hard to paint it and match the paint exactly. He's only had it for a few days, but it's a hit so far! He also really likes the pizza kit and the sandwich-making set.
Customer Review: Great for teaching little chefs! Summary: 5 Stars
Both my kids love this! Even my one year old managed to figure this toy out from watching how it was done. They sit and cut the different foods as fast as I can put them back together for them! lol Great for teaching different foods, as well as a safe way to start teaching knife and food prep skills for when they get older. The sounds and effects from the velcro are more realistic than I was expecting. Also comes with a very sturdy wooden basket that is so handy for keeping everything together. the only negative thing I have found is that the paint seems to come off relatively easily, but I expect that this is combination of using less toxic chemical paints and my kids playing with it so much. Overall, I am very pleased. Would totally recommend it to anyone with little toddlers or preschoolers!
