Customer Review: Fractions are whipped with this!

The velcro attaches easily. This is a great toy to begin teaching counting and fractions. We also own the Pizza Party: Wooden Pizza Set by Lights, Camera, Interaction. We were initially introduced to these great toy products by my aunt who teaches violin. She uses these toys to explain musical notation and fractions. The utilization of this toy for introductory math has been invaluable for teaching our daughter. Sometimes we don't realize how much she understands these concepts. The parts hold up extremely well to the 2 1/2 year old age group, but I must reiterate - these are not for a family that doesn't not keep up with parts to games or toys. It is also a toy that is best used with hands-on adult expaination. The most educational experience can be derived that way (I guess, as with all things in life.)What is especially fun is when she mixes the 2 toys together and I get a slice of pizza with a carrot or watermelon slice on it.

We got this for our 3 year old last Christmas. It has had a ton of use since then, and I enthusiastically recommend the cutting food box to other parents! Pieces are painted pretty bright colors and they are sturdy. My daughter and I especially love the satisfying "crunch" noise made when you "slice" the pieces apart with the wooden knife. Putting them all back together again is fun, too. The storage box is an added bonus, however, it would be even better if there was some kind of lid on the top. All-in-all, the set is great value for money! Oh, one more thing: you may look at this and think "my kid is too old/will get bored with this - it's too simple to hold his/her attention." Nope. I had the same concern - that it would not hold the interest of my 3 year old. In fact, it's the simplicity of the set and refreshing lack of gimmicks that make this (and other Melissa & Doug toys) so wonderful for toddlers and preschoolers. I ordered this for my son because his preschool has something similar and he loves it. It seems very durable and I didn't notice any fumes as some other reviewers had. I did notice that the red paint from the watermelon rubbed off on the cutting board during shipping and also rubbed off onto the knife the first time he cut through it. The velcro is so strong he can't cut through it without help, but he's only 2 1/2 and I think the product is 3+, so I'm sure he'll grow into it and also the velcro will get broken in. My only other little complaint is that some of the vegetables/fruit are not really recognizable, but that's not a big deal, we'll come up with our best guess and go with that. He has lots of Melissa and Doug toys and puzzles and we have been very happy with them. They're well made and stand up to the abuse of a 2 year old boy very well. It looks like this will be something he plays with for years to come.

We bought this toy for our two year old daughter as a Chanukah gift and she is so enthralled with it. I should have bought two of them because my four year old son is just as enthralled as she is! We will definitely be adding more of similar products by Melissa and Doug to the collection. Really great buy for the money, the kids love chopping the food up and the crunch, as others have reviewed, is oddly satisfying! My husband and I had to take a turn at chopping the food up too! Isn't having kids great? Anyway, very cool concept...very neat toy! You won't be disappointed.
The only concern that I can say that I may possibly have would be the velcro that connects the layers wearing out eventually with all the cutting and pulling apart. I figure if that happens, it's a relatively easy fix with just buying more velro in the craft store, cutting, fitting, and super gluing!

People all say they love this toy. I bought it about 1.5 years ago. I have tried to like it, as my daughter got older I hoped my feelings about it would improve, but they haven't (She is 4 and my son is 18 months). It is cute and maybe for an older child who likes puzzles it would be great, but the way that it has to be put together is not easy for a small child. Some pieces have two sides of the same type of velcro and if you misplace those, the rest of the pieces are useless. It also makes it hard for little ones to get it together correctly. My kids do enjoy playing with the little pieces, so it hasn't been a total waste, but I always end up having to put them back together and search for the parts all over the house. I feel similarly about the sandwich kit. The cookies and the cake are great. I also have the 4 food groups and I wish I had ordered two of those instead of this.
