Wonderful Learning Toy! I bought this for my son--yes, a BOY!--when he was about two years old, (along with a play kitchen set-up, etc.). I wanted him to explore toys that are traditionally considered 'girlie'--he had the 'boy' stuff already covered--he has tons of guns, action figures & military stuff since his big sister is a Marine!
As for this toy--along with just about anything that's made by Melissa & Doug--he LOVED it as a toddler & he continued to play with it off and on until he was in first grade--and unbeknown to him--I donated it to a younger neighbor. This truly upset my son. He was quite attached to the toy although we had lost a couple of the pieces over the years. Oh well, mom blew that one! lol...
At first glance, this may seem like a toy for the toddler crowd, but from our experience, even school age kids love to practice their cutting and creative food-combining skills. I've purchased this set several times as birthday gifts, and it is always a hit! And you can't beat the price for a dependable, high-quality wooden toy.
*** One note for parents or kids who are perfectionists ***
The cucumber, the carrot and the bread connect in many ways--but to get them back together perfectly--you may want to mark them before you first pull them apart so you'll be able to duplicate the original configuration. This sounds odd I know, but the items can 'look askew' if not 'just right.' To fix this problem, I used a fine point black sharpie and discreetly marked the direction & angle on the confusing sections. Worked like a charm!
Customer Review: Great motor skill development, POOR paint quality!!!

This set was given to my son Christmas day, yesterday, December 25, 2010. I looked at the toys last night and they were chipping...the paint is chipping off the toys in less than 24 hours!!!!!
The ONLY thing my son did with these items were cut them with the play knife provided. He also play feed the family, lol. No one actually put these items in their mouth, thank GOD!!!
I favor wood toys, they are made to last. In an age where it seems that most toy manufacturers have built their billion-dollar businesses on making toys that are "disposable" not biodegradable but disposable. Toys that have to be replaced by new ones over and over again, adding to land-fills...and the toy makers pockets! I appreciate Melissa & Doug's commitment to building toys the way they use to be built, solid. Nevertheless, the unfortunate fact is the poor paint job, on the otherwise solid build toys, really does take away from the overall quality of the product. Therefore, my suggestion is if your children are still at the stage of putting toys, etc. in their mouths, DO NOT BUY THIS ITEM!
A suggestion I would have for the company is continue making solid toys. But consider creating a "naked wood" product line. This could really draw a new target population of customers. Parents who are concerned about toxic paints used on toysma y re-consider your product. They may even choose to paint the items themselves. Another "fun" activity of parent and child. So, bottom line, you skip the paint process, you build a new customer base.

We bought this for my daughter when she was 18 months, and she absolutely loves this toy. She "cuts" food multiple times a day.. and is a pro at it! At first, I had to show her how to cut the food.. and she would get frustrated easily when she couldnt do it on her own, but it didnt take long and she mastered the skill of cutting.
The food items are very durable. I do have two drawbacks to this toy though:
- First, my daughter plays with this toy multiple times a day. She is a pro at cutting it up.. but at 22 months, she still doesnt know how to put the food back together. That means, she cuts everything up, and there is a HUGE pile of broken food on the floor! I have to put them all back together for her so she can cut up again. Hopefully she will learn how to do this on her own soon..
- Second, the velcro is starting to wear out on some of the food. They still stick together.. but not as tightly as they did when the toy was new. So, I'm a little concerned that we have only had this toy for less than 5 months and the velcro has already started to wear down the "stickiness" for the food stick together. Would be better if they were magnets instead of velcro..
Overall, very good toy though.. and keeps my daughter entertained for a long time - highly recommend this toy.

My girls (aged 2, 3, and 4) received this toy for Christmas last year. They loved playing with it, and did learn to cut the toys right away. But, they played with the pieces in a bowl of water in their toy kitchen. The pieces didn't even last a few days before the paint started chipping off. I've seen this problem with several other Melissa and Doug toys, including other food crate toys and lacing beads. I had a friend who's 2yr old child had a food cutting set, and I was skeptical of whether my 2yr old daughter would also like it. I picked Melissa and Doug's set b/c their quality is always excellent, and I am again impressed with the craftsmanship and detail of this set. I am also pleasantly suprised to find that of all the expensive electronic gifts my 2yo got for her birthday, this has turned out to be her favorite toy!!!! It keeps her entertained for quite a while, and is great for parent/child play together. I only wish it came with more pieces, as mommy sometimes gets bored (but my daughter definately doesn't seem to mind, she just keeps cutting!) Excellent for hand-eye and fine motor coordination, educational (verbal, counting, colors, etc) skills, and withstands a significant toddler beating. Also handy to have the storage box for clean-up. I also strongly recommend Melissa and Doug's sandwich making set, which makes a nice coordinated set with this one, and increases the educational value and variety (for mommy who seems to get bored more quickly than my daughter!)
