Customer Review: A perfect birthday gift for a 3-6 year old

When my granddaughter turned 3 I gave her this toy made by Melissa and Doug. I have purchased several of their toys in the past, both for her and for some of my friends children.
This one was a big hit due to the fact that my granddaughter is just beginning to understand concepts such as special days and special foods. Shortly after the party every adult was served a piece of Sasha's special "birthday cake". She paid extra attention to the candles as well as explaining the significance of them to each guest (in very impressive 3 year-old-speak).
I am a fan of Melissa and Doug's toys but I am a little concerned about the peeling paint issues that some have complained of. I have encouraged my daughter to keep an eye on the finish just in case. So far a great toy for a 3 year old!

I was a huge fan of Melissa and Doug products. I went in to buy this set at a local toy store and was saddened to see the Made in China label- in fact all the products that were in that particular store by Melissa and Doug were made in China. What bothered me about that fact was that they market themselves as USA made and that clearly isn't the fact anymore.
I chose not to buy it anymore- particularly with the amount of red paint on this toy food product. Now they do say they test and test and safety test.
But as a parent, I chose to not buy it anymore because of my concerns about product safety from China.
Sad to say I will no longer be buying Melissa and Doug- the stuff is adorable I just can't be guaranteed of it's safety anymore.

My daughter received this toy for her 2nd birthday. Two months later, she still plays with it - she loves it. There are so many pieces to this toy (which can be seen as a good thing or a bad thing..) but my daughter loves the options.. either all candles.. or gumdrops.. jelly beans.. strawberries, the possibilities of decorating the cake are endless!
I do want to note though that when we first opened the kit, the smell of paint was strong. It was gone the next day.. but wow. Wouldnt recommend this toy to any child who still puts things in their mouth..
Overall, very good toy. My daughter loves to cut the cake and serve it.. it is very durable - love the wood toys by Melissa & Doug. Highly recommend this toy to any child!

This is a great toy. My 3 and 5 year old sons love playing with it. The only drawback that there is no cover for the wooden box that holds everything and the pieces can easily spill out. We have the Melissa & Doug Pizza Party and it comes with a clear lid that slides on (not sure if they all have it, but our model does). The lid keeps all the pieces in their place. The top of the wooden birthday cake box is open all the time with no lid and the pieces area always loose all over the place. Not sure why there is no lid. Other than the packaging, it's a great toy. It seems as if some models have a lid and some don't. Maybe just the 'newer' versions have it? Not sure. But if you can find one with a lid, it makes the toy more convenient to store.Customer Review: kids LOVE it!

My son asked for a play kitchen for his 6th birthday. I purchased a Melissa & Doug kitchen, and this cake as well. When he unwrapped the kitchen on his birthday he found this cake placed in the oven (with 6 candles on top!)--I thought it added a nice birthday touch to his gift.
Both my son & daughter (who is 4) LOVE this toy! I was surprised by how much entertainment it brings, but it really has been a hit. They are able to arrange the cake in different ways, use different toppings, and take it apart to serve everyone a slice.
Also, it comes with a nice little wooden tray that we continue to use with the play kitchen.
This is a great gift for kids, especially for birthdays.
