Customer Review: Enduring toy that fosters imaginative play

My daughter is on the cusp of her fourth birthday. She received this set when she turned two. I have been surprised at how much she has enjoyed this and how much use she got out of it. It went largely ignored the first year or so she had it, then one day she got it out and has played with it nearly every day sense. My daughter loves to decorate the cake; serve pieces to me, my husband, and her friends; she even seems perfectly enamored with putting it all back together for storage! I have seen a lot of imaginative play from her with this toy. Of course she puts on little birthday parties with it, but she has also come up with some really innovative uses for the various pieces. I would say that based on my daughter's experience, 3-4 is the perfect age for this set. I have given it as a gift and will continue to give it in the future. One of my children was given this as a birthday gift, and while the kids like it okay and do play with it some, I have a few issues with it. First, as others have mentioned, there is no lid to the box. Annoying! Secondly, the paint does come off the pieces! Of course, being "food", kiddos are going to put pieces in their mouths to pretend-eat it. (Even though I always tell them not to!) It is very obvious which pieces have been in kids' mouths, due to the paint chipping and wearing off. Even if it's lead-free, it's not a great thing to have happen! Third, there are just too many little pieces for this mom's preference and I end up finding them strewn all through the house. And finally, it's just odd to me that the two of the cake toppings are jelly beans and gumdrops. Overall, I do not like this toy and would not recommend it to others.Customer Review: Let's celebrate!

This was perfect for my children. I had been searching for something similar for awhile. I have twins who are three and my oldest is four and they love to not only celebrate their own birthdays but pretend it's birthday time. They have a play kitchen at home w/ a stove, oven, etc. so this enables them to bake a cake, top w/ candles and other toppings, slice and serve. It's educational in that it allows them to count the number of candles they want to place on top. It's cute. It occupies them for hours and they take so much pride in the cakes the make and love to show them off. And there's no question that it's durable b/c it's wood. I was not so much familiar w/ Melissa & Doug but I would definitely consider them in the future. And surprisingly, a family member gave my twins a Melissa & Doug puzzle. This is a good one ...Customer Review: A favorite toy in my house!

I gave the Melissa & Doug birthday cake to my daughter for her second birthday, and five months later, she still plays with it almost everyday. The "slicing" of the first piece hasn't been a problem for us because she almost never wants the cake put together. She likes to spread all the pieces around and decorate the individual slices. Sometimes she takes my cake order ("A slice with gumdrops and a blue candle, please!"), and sometimes she does her own thing.
I love the storage box, but I wish it had a cover. From the older reviews, it seems like it used to have a plastic lid; I'm not sure why they got rid of it. Like all the other Melissa & Doug toys we have, this set is durable and will last for years. We have never had problems with paint chipping--I don't know what you people are doing to those toys! :)
Customer Review: love this toy for so many reasons

Bought this toy for my granddaughter 3 weeks in advance of her birthday, so she would have the fun of anticipation, practice "blowing out" candles, etc.. Also, she was getting a play kitchen for her birthday, so she will be able to "bake" cakes when she plays.
It has been a big hit, not only with her but also with her mom and dad.
It is arranged in pieces that are velcro'd so she can "cut" it. There are plenty of ways she can decorate it, count the decorations, etc., and it all fits into a wooden box so she can organize it and put it away.
The only reason I did not give it all 5s is that the box needs to be more sturdy, and it is made in China, so I am slightly worried about the possibility of lead in the paint. I should contact Melissa and Doug to check on that.
