Toys and Games Reviews of Melissa & Doug 60-Piece Standard Unit BlocksCustomer Review: Measure standard unit if using with another brand Summary: 4 Stars
I was very pleased to find "standard unit blocks* at a reasonable price. They are well made and the "units" align perfectly. I had one dissapointment when I started playing with them with my grandson. He already had a set of "standard unit blocks" but there weren't enough blocks to really build anything with, so I was hoping the two sets could be used together. Turns out the set he already had uses a slightly larger basic unit module and the math concept is lost when using the two sets together. I just put the old set away since the Melissa and Doug set has many more blocks. Apparently there is no "stanard" basic unit SIZE when the term "standard unit blocks" term is used, which I learned from this experience. Aside from this I am very pleased with the set and would recommend it.
Customer Review: A Must for Every Preschooler! Summary: 5 Stars
What a great value! The quality of these bocks is extremely high -- durable hardwood in lots of different shapes to encourage creativity in young builders. These are the same blocks that are found in preschools and kindergartens. I was amazed at how reasonable the price was. And the sturdy wooden box is a great plus for keeping the blocks in one place. Our 21 month old has had these blocks for one month and has been having fun with them from the start. She began building roads and playing with the qualities of the different shapes - rolling the cylinders and rocking the half circles and has already progressed to building upwards. I will probably want to buy her a second set in another year to expand the possibilities of the set as she becomes more sophisticated in her usage.
Customer Review: Great toy Summary: 4 Stars
Great toy! Our kids are very different ages (1 1/2 and 5 1/2) and this toy works well for both of them. The blocks are smooth, have rounded edges, and there is a wide variety of shapes. The only problem, as others have mentioned, is the box. It is cheaply made and our kids want so bad to stand and sit in it, as any kid would. We stop them for it is clear it would break. Also, it would be nice if the box was just a bit deeper. While it is looks great if all the blocks are in order, really, how often is that going to happen? So they always fall out the top, which makes storage a bit of a pain. A slightly deeper box would fix that. But I have other M & D products and have wished those ones had deeper boxes (shaped blocks for beading), so, maybe that is just how they make containers.
Customer Review: BOX IS DANGEROUS; SHARP EDGES AND CORNERS Summary: 4 Stars
I bought these for my son for Christmas 2 years ago. His little brother tripped over one of the blocks and split his head open on the box. The sharp edges and corners on the blocks are sanded down, but not on the box. The sharp edge of the box cut my son when he fell on it. If it had been sanded down I doubt he would have gotten more than a bruise. After this I got rid of the box and put the blocks in a rubbermaid tub. I have no problem with the blocks themselves, other than the fact that I have to keep them away from the little ones because they like to throw them (and they are heavy enough to do some damage), but that is not M&D's fault. They should sand down the edges/corners on the box though. Maybe if they had, my son wouldn't have a scar over his eye today.
Customer Review: Every boy needs a good set of wooden building blocks Summary: 5 Stars
My three-year old nephew looks to be a future engineer or architect, judging by the way he loves to take things apart and put them back together. But his toys were kind of fussy and had a limited number to ways to be assembled. I went looking for a good set of wooden blocks and to my surprise, found few available, and most quite expensive.
This Melissa and Doug set was quite reasonable by comparison, and offered a good number (60 pieces) of multiple shapes, smoothly finished and ready for infinite design experiments and solutions. At Christmas, my nephew fell on these blocks like he'd hit the Mother Lode of gold, and immediately plunged into making who knows what, stacking them as high as his head. It was fun for the observers too!
