Toys and Games Reviews of Melissa & Doug 60-Piece Standard Unit Blocks

Customer Review: relieved that they're good and seem safe
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm not a big fan of Melissa and Doug in general and think Plan Toys are generally better designed and have a nicer, clean look. Also, I know Melissa and Doug have had recalls (I think there was a stacking train with bad paint), and that a lot of their toys are manufactured in China (including said stacking train).

But I figured, hey, unit blocks are pretty simple and require little design input, they're unpainted, and Melissa and Doug have a box of 60 for $ [...] (the Plan Toys pack was smaller, more expensive and didn't come with a nice storage box) -- they can't mess this up, can they? YAY!! They didn't! They're awesome!

Also, I don't know if this will hold true for M&D unit blocks in the future, but the box I got said it was manufactured in Thailand (like Plan Toys). Double YAY!

Customer Review: WE LOVE THESE BLOCKS!
Summary: 5 Stars

When I was young, I had a set of solid wood standard unit blocks, and I played with them constantly. Ever since I became a mother, I've looked for a set that was good quality and affordable, and I've finally found them. We absolutely love these blocks. They were a Christmas gift for my 21-month-old son, and he and my 3-year-old play with them every day. They use them to build buildings, castles, and towers for their action figures, and roads for their cars. I didn't notice any smell from the blocks like some reviewers noted, and they don't splinter or split in any way. I would recommend buying more than one set to expand the fun, but one set is definitely enough to play with on it's own. My boys also love the wooden box that the blocks come in - it has been a boat, a chair, and some other very imaginative things. :)

Customer Review: LOVE these blocks
Summary: 5 Stars

I ordered 2 sets of these blocks for my son's 1st birthday which is next week. I ordered them on the 8th and with the free super saver shipping were here on the 10th. So FAST! I was very impressed. They came well packaged too, almost too good.
They are a lot nicer than I expected, and I had high expectations after reading other reviews.
I ordered two sets because others had suggested doing so, as the set of 60 doesn't go all that far when 2 or more kids are playing and I was trying to ward off future fights with cousins. Besides, blocks are timeless.
I did not open the seal on the actual package but it doesn't look like any of the blocks are small enough to be choking hazards.
i can't wait for us to build lots of things together with these. I expect us to start using them right away.

Customer Review: Classic toy for all ages
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought these blocks for my 18 month old who has grown out of her baby toys. She was very excited and immediately entertained herself with removing all the blocks from the wooden box they came in. Then, while I built her towers to knock over, she had a blast putting her stuffed animal hippo to sleep in the box, then climbing in with it :D. She stacked a few blocks and knocked a few over and put them in and took them out of their box and that's about all the entertainment value they have for my 18th month old. I can tell, though, that these will provide endless entertainment for years to come as she grows and discovers new ways to play with them. I found them very fun myself! They come with just the right amount of blocks in various shapes to make a great variety of structures. Just terrific!

Customer Review: Every child should have these
Summary: 5 Stars

I got this set for my son 2 years ago, and now, at 5 years old, he still brings these out several times a week. The variety of shapes and sizes allow for a great deal of creativity, and there are plenty of blocks to build elaborate structures. Although wooden blocks lack the "wow" factor of fancy gadgets, I feel that the longevity of use and the requirement of imagination make these a much more valuable commodity for any toy box than the fad toys in which interest is fleeting. They are completely solid and smooth, they come in their own storage box, and they are durable enough to far outlast the childhood years. Furthermore, because they are natural, unpainted wood, they are a blank canvas for those kids--like mine--who want to use markers to add their own artwork. These are a must have!!
