Toys and Games Reviews of Melissa & Doug 60-Piece Standard Unit BlocksCustomer Review: One of the most played with toys at our house! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this set of blocks two years ago for my kids. It has been played with several times a week since then. It's been made into a castle, roadway, marble maze, hideout for GI Joes, doll furniture, pyramids for Egyptian Playmobil, rafts, towers, etc... It is one of the best toys I have ever bought and I have four kids. They are very durable. Great for open-ended, imaginiative play! Also, plenty for multiple kids to play with together. My 11 year old son just remarked a few days ago that it was one of his favorite toys we've gotten and that there aren't many toys that he and his three sisters (age 9, 5 & 2) can play together and all enjoy.
My only qualm with this great toy is that I wish it came in a box that was slighly bigger than all the blocks. So unless you play "Tetris" to align them all in the included wooden box, they don't fit properly. It's just a little annoying. But I still rate it a solid five stars. I would buy it again. I would buy it as a gift. I'm sure these will be saved for our grandchildren one day.
Customer Review: grandparent's review Summary: 5 Stars
For Christmas, we sent grandchildren the 60-piece block set. Because each household has 4 and a 2-yr. olds and we'd read reviews to get 2 sets to have enough variety of blocks, we sent 2 sets per family. We didn't see the sets until several weeks after Christmas, but saw that there was considerable excitement by the children for building buildings, towers [soon toppled with joy by the children] and creativity provided by the variety of shapes. Like previous reviewers, we immediately saw that glue is needed to keep the sides of the wooden boxes together which hold blocks when not in play or when the boxes are part of the block-building projects, but that is minor negative. Parents appreciated the fact that the children spend hours creating with the blocks, the gift doesn't require batteries or make music or noise [except the occasional crash] and that the children are also learning some principles of physics in the construction of shapes and buildings. We had fun with them, too. Blocks are well-shaped, smooth and seem well-made and durable.
Customer Review: Great Melissa and Doug products! Summary: 5 Stars
Purchase of this set along with the car carrier, the race car set, and the town set for my 4yr old grandson for Christmas were perfect choices. He loves building things (garages, houses, ramps, tunnels, towers, forts, etc)and pretending with anything car related so these items were perfect and have provided literally hours upon hours of imaginative fun for him alone and with other family members. The blocks especially are well sized, substantial, durable, with nice rounded corners. No problems whatsoever with wheels on the race cars or car carrier, and no problems with odor issues with the blocks some other reviewers have mentioned. The wood carrying/storage boxes for the blocks, town set and even the race cars are great when it's time to pick up - but during play time get used/turned into part of the play (bases for any of the above-mentioned building "projects".)I recommend any/all of the four purchases to stimulate good old-fashioned, creative, imaginative play for younger and even older children. I would buy them again.
Customer Review: Very good quality for the money! Summary: 5 Stars
I was very impressed with this set. First, the blocks are very nicely sanded and have rounded edges. Second, they are big blocks and lots of them. There's enough to really build something, but I could see buying a second set later if the child really loves these and wants more. Third, most of these are good shapes. I only have two complaints. I wish there had been 2 more of the really big blocks (4 total would have been nice). And I wish they didn't have the 4 little bitty "quarter circles." Those seemed lame. I would have liked maybe 4 half columns, instead. There was enough room in the box for that. Fourth, the box they come in is nice, but be warned. It's HEAVY when full of blocks. I had trouble lifting it when full, so don't expect a child to be able to lug this around. However, when not full, it could be used as a really big block. Rubberwood probably isn't the classiest wood around, but it was very nice, and I feel proud to give this as a gift. It easily looks like a set that costs 2 to 4 times as much.
Customer Review: Every child should have these! Summary: 5 Stars
These blocks are all you could ask for--and at an unbelievable price!! These are indeed "Standard Unit Blocks". They are just like what you will find in Preschool and Kindergarten classes. The selection of sizes and shapes is very, very good for a set with only 60 blocks total. That being said, if you can afford it I would strongly recommend buying 2 sets. When youngsters start building it's a shame if they run out of building materials for their creative experiences. The quality, weight, and workmanship of these blocks is outstanding. This is surely a gift that can be passed on for generations. In this day and age of pricey toys-so many being electronic and/or requiring only "one right answer or goal" it's incredibly refreshing and truely necessary to encourage children to be creative and explore learning through active free play. I purchased 2 sets of these blocks for my 3 & 4 yr old boys. I believe that the purchase of these blocks are probably one of the most valuable "toy" choices I have and will make.
