Toys and Games Reviews of Melissa & Doug 60-Piece Standard Unit BlocksCustomer Review: Just what we were looking for! Big Blocks! Summary: 5 Stars
These blocks are fantastic. My 2 year-old son had been given a different set of wooden blocks for his birthday, but the blocks were so tiny they were practically useless. They were much too small for him to try to build with.
I had been wanting to get a set of old-school wooden blocks like these for my son for a long time, but had a hard time finding them. I remembered playing with similar blocks in elementary school and having a great time with them. And Mister Rogers often plays with classic blocks like these on his show.
I was delighted to find these blocks on Amazon. Got them on sale for $29.99 with free Super Saver shipping. A fantastic deal! These blocks are the standard, large wooden blocks. My son plays with these almost daily, which is a much better track record than most of his other toys. I know he will continue to get a lot of use from these, and when he's older I think we'll buy the architectural set (also by Melissa and Doug) to allow him greater flexibility in building. I really like Melissa and Doug toys, and these blocks were a great deal! (Make sure to watch for free shipping. The blocks are heavy, so shipping can be expensive otherwise.)
Customer Review: best blocks ever. Atleast compared to what we own Summary: 5 Stars
I have 2 other sets of blocks. One of which I assumed was standard unit sized. One of which I ordered online and it was much smaller then my "standard" ones. But whatever. They were fine.
Along comes another kid and we needed another set of blocks to have enough, so I got these to match my other standard blocks. Wrong. These are even bigger then the ones I had.Now I have 3 different sized blocks. But these are wonderful. I dont know what kind of wood they are made from, but they are heavy. Bad if your kid is a thrower I suppose, but we love it. The towers are more stable which makes building easier for the 3 year old... and due to the weight it makes knocking them down with nerf darts more challenging for the older kids. I dont notice any odor, staining or wood filler. The silly little pieces that are of no value but to up the count? Balony. My kid immediately grabbed the half circle, pretended it was a car and drove it all over smooth and bumpy roads ( the other blocks). Kept him busy for an hour, I kid you not.
I love these so much I'm considering another set and packing away my older, smaller, light weight ones.
Customer Review: You can't go wrong with old fashioned blocks! Summary: 5 Stars
I had them when I was younger and I'm sure that can be said for many people that I know. Of course there are other toys that can be used to build with like Legos, Knex and Erector Sets, but for me wooden blocks bring back memories that make you want to play with them again.
So far all of the Melissa & Doug items I've purchased for my Grandson have been wonderful, these blocks included. The are very well constructed, arrive in a wooden case that is great for storage and they also have a good assortment of sizes for building. These were a lot of fun for anyone that played with them during a recent visit and I can see them lasting for years to come. I wouldn't be surprised if several generations from now these are still being passed on through the family. If you are looking to purchase blocks, but maybe want to start out with less of an investment I would also recommend the Melissa & Doug 100 Piece Wood Blocks Set. They are smaller, colorful blocks that might be better for littler hands.
Customer Review: This is NOT a true standard unit block set! Summary: 3 Stars
If you are looking for a budget set, you can't go wrong with this set or any of the M&D products. BTW, I find M&D very good at copying other products from various companies like HABA, Brio etc; maybe that's why they can afford to sell their products are a cheaper price.
The storage box is great for keeping things in place, but don't expect a child to be able to lift over 15 pounds of blocks without hurting himself.
Cheap is the key word. However, if quality is what you are looking for, you will be disapointed. The so called hardwood is rubberwood. The wood and/or the staining smells strange, like moldy smell (we are onto our 3rd exchange and they smell the same). The staining, finish or whatever you call it, is so thin that it comes off readily with a single wipe and you'll have to oil the blocks to keep them smooth again.
Many of the blocks are not true SUBs. Just look at the bigger triangle on the photo of the crate and you'll see what I mean. and the smaller pieces like 1/4 circles are for the sole purpose of increasing the block counts.
Customer Review: Melissa & Doug Toys Summary: 5 Stars
My 4 year old son just loves to play with the wooden building blocks at Pre-School. So I decided that he needed a set of his own to make special creations at home too. I ordered two boxes of them, thinking one box would not be enough blocks. Well I recieved them in the mail and the boxes are alot bigger than I had realized! Containing alot more wooden blocks than I thought they would! So I recommend one box of blocks, unless you have one heck of an imaginative kid, who will need more blocks, then order two.
The durability of the blocks is wonderful! I had shopped for a long time to find a reasonabley priced set of blocks that had good durability. Melissa & Doug 60 piece standard unit blocks were what I was looking for.
These blocks give my son endless hours of fun time making neat creations! And a BONUS is that the blocks come in a wooden container so you can store them away neatly.
The price on these blocks are awesome! I looked at block sets that were very high and found these to be the best priced with the best durability!
