Customer Review: Fun; encourages creativity. A little messy.

We bought this as a birthday present for my 10-year-old daughter. She has always enjoyed creative/scientific type toys like chemistry sets. This toy is fairly easy to set up; it took us about 15 minutes the first time (but much less for subsequent uses once we had figured out how everything connects). Pouring the different colored powders into the appropriate containers tends to get a bit messy as some spillage is inevitable. What is great fun for the kids (my 5-year-old also enjoyed participating) is deciding what colors to use and in what proportions to blend them into their very own bouncy ball. Once they have mixed the powders the way they want it is straightforward to dunk the mold into the water container to make the bouncy ball.
This toy seems to be very well made and durable. Nothing has broken so far. Biggest downside is the mess, as the powder and water tends to spill. This toy would be ideal for outdoor play on the deck, but where we live it is too cold for that right now. I would recommend putting down a few layers of newspaper first.
The balls that this toy makes are fun and bounce satisfactorily high (perhaps not quite as high as a pre-made bouncy ball). We found that the balls tended to have a small "bump" attached to the spherical part, due to the shape of the ball mold. This was not a problem as it is easy to remove this bump with scissors before the ball has been dried.
The best aspect of this toy is how the kids control the appearance of the final product, the same formula that has proved so lucrative for "Build-a-Bear Workshop". I like toys that encourage creativity as opposed to passive play. And my kids seem to like this too.
