Customer Review: Big disapointment

My daughter received the Salon & Pet Shop and the 2 Story House - Pink with purple window for Christmas. Neither one of the items worked as they should. I have detailed our specific problems below but basically our Pixel Chix doesn't do anything - it's almost like a demo mode.
House issues:
Repeats the same action each time it's cut on and promptly cuts off e.g. House downstairs, walks in and greets you with one of three actions,
"Hi, I'm your new friend" - then cuts off
Dancing - then cuts off
Flips through 3 outfits, says "Fabulous" - then cuts off.
Upstairs - either jumps on the bed then cuts off or brushes hair then cuts off
Salon & Pet Shop issues:
In Salon asks, "Should I get a manicure", then cuts off
In Pet Shop, either asks, "Do you have puppies" - completes money transaction and cuts off or orders a pizza with cheese, eats then cuts off
NOTE:
If both units are connected, new activities are available (though Salon/Pet Shop girl is disembodied)
If disconnected while both are turned on, you can do new activities in the House though as soon as it cuts off it reverts back to original problems.
My poor dd has been trying and trying to get these to work and it's been heartbreaking. We've tried replacing batteries, checking connections, and resetting the product. Nothing works. We're calling Mattel tommorrow to see if these can be replaced. For the life of me, I can't figure out how we received two different products that do not work.

This virtual mall has a flip screen that allows your Pixel Chix gal to move between the shops. Seven different input buttons allow for many interactions, including "work," "make money" and "shop." The more your Pixel Chix gal works, the more money she has to spend on all the cool things in the mall.There are two Pixel Love 2 Shop Malls, each with two shops - a salon/pet shop mall (included) and boutique/food court mall (sold separately). Connect the malls together so your Pixel Chix girlfriends can hang out or shop together. You can even connect a Pixel Chix house and car (sold separately) to the mall.
