It's "Fabulous!" Pixel Chix? Electronic Pal Opens A New Door To "Playing House"
Mattel Brings To Kids A 2-D Girl Living In A 3-D World!?
EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (Aug. 04, 2005) - There's a new girl in town who is sure to become a V.F.F. (virtual friend forever) to girls everywhere. Available at retail stores nationwide this week, Pixel Chix? pals, the newest interactive toys from Mattel, Inc. [NYSE: MAT], combine activities that mirror a girl's life with technology.
A Pixel Chix? pal is housed, quite literally, in a three-dimensional, four-inch plastic home and shares her personality, spunk and interactivity through an innovative application of liquid crystal display (LCD) technology. Girls have a window onto the two-dimensional pixilated Pixel Chix? figure and control how she interacts seamlessly with the 3-D furnishings, staircase and door.
A Pixel Chix? pal comes to life in her virtual home when girls engage her in activities like those from their own everyday lives, such as trying on fashions and socializing with friends. During the day, the time-aware Pixel Chix? pal will ask aloud, "What should we do?" Girls press an activity button - food, fashion, play or go out - to choose a play category, and then select from the options presented to them using the "yes" or "no" buttons.
Dress her in a stylish outfit, and a Pixel Chix? pal responds "fabulous." Choose her favorite food, and she sits at the 3-D kitchen table to eat it. Send her to bed and she climbs up the 3-D stairs to her bedroom, brushes her teeth, turns out the lights and begins lightly snoring. Three different Pixel Chix? houses are available: a stylish loft, a cozy country cottage, and a lavish mansion. Up to 10 Pixel Chix? houses can be connected together, allowing their "residents" to socialize - they may chat with each other on the phone, engage in a special group dance, or walk out their virtual front doors to visit each other's Pixel Chix? houses for a party or movie night.
"Our research indicates that about half of all youth electronics purchases are made by girls, and Pixel Chix? is the first youth electronics item that parallels a little girl's everyday life," said Stephanie Cota, vice president, girls marketing, Mattel Brands. "We say she's 'a 2-D girl living in a 3-D world!?,' because she loves to do the same things a little girl does - she talks, eats, sleeps, exercises, hangs out and plays games. And because girls have told us they want items they can play along with their friends, we've built in fun surprise features that occur only when girls connect their Pixel Chix? houses together."
THE FULL PIXEL CHIX PICTURE
A Pixel Chix? pal is full of humorous helpings of attitude. Keep her waiting, and a restless Pixel Chix? pal reminds you with tapping feet and a well-timed "ahem." Send her to bed during the daytime, and she's likely to say, "no way!" before sulking upstairs to her bedroom. Suggest that she play outside in her nightgown, and a Pixel Chix? pal exclaims, "you want me to go outside in this?"
The more girls play with their Pixel Chix? pal, the more their virtual world will expand as they accumulate more foods, fashions and games, such as playing the guitar or singing karaoke, adopting a dog or a cat, ordering out pizza or fixing hamburgers, and dressing in tutus or bathing suits. On the other hand, if girls forget to tend to their Pixel Chix? pal, she will descend through levels of neglect, losing her accumulated treasures as her house becomes covered with cobwebs and, eventually, the Pixel Chix? pal "packs up and leaves."
The Pixel Chix? pal and her accessories appear in her house through a transmissive LCD screen displayed in negative mode. Two high-bright light emitting diodes (LEDs) illuminate the pixels on the display and the 3-D objects in the house. A Pixel Chix? pal communicates with her V.F.F. through embedded speakers and is powered by three AAA batteries (included). Pixel Chix? pals are available at retailers nationwide for an approximate retail price of $29.99 each.
Description of Pixel Chix DollHouse #1Pixel Chix pal is a 2-D girl living in a 3-D world, totally unique, totally fun and totally cool! To interact with your Pixel Chix pal just "push her buttons" literally! Using the input buttons on the fashionable, handheld house, help your Pixel Chix pal decide all kinds of things, like what to do - play guitar or go rollerblading' Where to go tonight - on a date or to a concert' What to wear - a skirt or a bathing suit' What to eat, and even when to go to bed. Your Pixel Chick pal will talk to you and tell you what she wants. She'll tell you if she's happy (or not!) about the choices you make. There are five levels of play. At each new level, accumulate more choices of foods, fashions, games and places to go. The more you play, the more stuff you get, but if you ignore your Pixel Chix pal, the more stuff you lose! Connect two houses together and then the Pixel Chix pals can visit or have a party. Connect them together and they'll each do a coordinated activity like talk on the phone in their respective houses. Requires 4 "AA" batteries (included). Sort of a pared-down version of The Sims computer game, Pixel Chix provides grade-school girls with a virtual buddy whose every move they can control. Residing in a charming yellow plastic cottage, this Pixel Chick is a 2-dimensional LCD image imposed on a background with 3-dimensional furniture. Five action buttons on the front program the Pixel Chix pal to play, eat, change clothes, go out, or go to sleep, and "yes" and "no" buttons let girls answer the Pixel Chick?s questions. As long as girls are playing with their chick, she is happy; but ignore her, and she gives her owner a lot of ?tude by anxiously tapping her foot and clearing her throat. Attentive owners will continue to advance along the 5-level gaming system and accumulate more cool stuff for their Pixel Chix pal. However, neglecting the pal causes her to lose all her possessions and, eventually, her screen darkens and she splits. Connecting two Pixel Chix houses together lets virtual friends visit one another while hooking three or more together causes the pals to have a multi-caller phone chat or perform a dance together. While thoroughly entertaining for young girls, parents may tire of hearing the loud conga music or the word "Fabulous!" spoken over and over again. The house runs on three "AAA" batteries, which are included with purchase. --Cristina Vaamonde
