Toys and Games Reviews of Othello

Customer Review: Expand Your Mind and Your Child's--While Walking Down Memory Lane!
Summary: 5 Stars

I loved this game with a passion as a child, and have many vivid memories of sitting with my father playing it with him. My father, like so many of his generation, was a busy working man who didn't stop very often for such "trivialities" (but did enjoy games of skill), I think it's a huge testament to how this game bridges age gaps in its universal appeal.

Now, all these years later (30 to be exact) I rediscovered the game with my own children. It's challenging, fun, and doesn't get tiresome precisely because it IS great entertainment for all ages. My husband even uses it as a mentor at the local school, and has found it a great conversation opener in the course of the mentor program.

I have one small beef--it should come with a ready supply of extra game pieces. As far as I can tell our game didn't come with any extras. Of course, that could just be that we lost those too. :)

If you enjoy games at all, you'll definitely love this one--and your kids will be crazy about it!

Customer Review: A terrific game -- and not just for kids!
Summary: 5 Stars

Many reviews have talked about how great Othello is for kids -- and it is! But make no mistake, adults find this just as absorbing and challenging as chess.

For once, an advertising slogan is true: "A minute to learn. A lifetime to master."

Well, it might take as much as two or three minutes to learn, or to teach to someone. Then you're ready to go.

And don't let the phrase "A lifetime to master" discourage you. It means that you'll never outgrow this game -- you'll learn something new every time you play. It's ideal as a social game, lasting only ten or fifteen minutes (serious players may want to take more time).

I bought Othello in 1983 when it was made by Gabriel. Some reviewers have expressed reservations about the quality of Mattel's version. But remember, this can be played on any 8x8 board, and you can use your own containers for the pieces. So don't let that stop you from discovering this great game.

Customer Review: My favorite game
Summary: 5 Stars

This is my favorite game. The rules are easy enough so that you can learn in 5 minutes. However, the game changes as your skill level changes.

If you are young, this is an excellent mind-expanding game, plus a lot of fun.

If you aren't very good at games, this can be a good social game that is quick to learn. Just make sure you play someone at your skill level.

If you love strategy games, this game is for you. If you haven't played it since you were a kid, you probably haven't appreciated the intense strategic elements in this game. I think this game coined the phrase "A minute to learn, a lifetime to master." It is a lot of fun going through the mastery process.

The quality is not as good as I remember it as a kid, but the board will hold together even though the green felt will wear quickly.

And, as a trivia note, Othello is the brand name of the generic game of Reversi. Reversi is available for free at many online gaming sites.

Customer Review: It will exercise her 9 yr old brain more than a Barbie ever could
Summary: 4 Stars

I was happy to give my 9 year old cousin a game to exercise her brain rather than a Barbie or a video game.

She learned the rules in the first 5 minutes of the first game, with just a few snags (had trouble understanding that the discs must be placed contigously. also occasional trouble understanding that discs cannot be flipped if they are surrounded by an opponent's disc by an indirect move). But the point is, she was able to play right away, and will eventually gain skills at strategy. her dad is teaching her to play chess now, which is all about strategy but is harder. Othello is a good game to be playing at the same age while learning chess, because it's easier but exercises the same parts of the brain for strategy and thinking ahead.

Customer Review: Holy **** This Rocks!!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

This just might be one of the coolest games out there. Sure, the box itself might make this game look boring, but once you actually play the game it's like FOOSH and you're in a different world. I mean this is AWESOME. It's also really durable as I've had it for about a year now and only the box has a slight tweak and that's all.

Although this "for ages 8 and up" which is SO lame, I think it should be for kids of all ages. Why? Because it is so easy to learn. It only took me like 2 minutes to learn it well and I am 9 years old.

Anyway, I STRONGLY suggest you buy this game for your kids or anybody who really likes strategy stuff.

'Later...
