Customer Review: Great ...with some minor design issues

I think chess is a great game to teach kids. And if your child likes harry potter this is a great motiviation to learn to play.The connection to the movie and the game pieces make it fun for them to learn and play.
Personally, I thought the board was WAY too small. And way too flimsy. Especially for beginning players when even the biggest board with the smallest pieces can be hard to keep up with. And I found the pieces to look pretty similar, altho my son had no trouble with that issue.
That said, the issues with the design of the game were mine and getting out this game is something my son loves. So i would have to classify them as minor.

This is a wonderful toy. It's fun and meanwhile an educational product. The Chess game is difficult(I say that because I play chess and I know what you have to learn). It's a game that wants a very good brain. This is the reason why many childrean don't want to play it. But when the Chess game is like that at Hogwarts, that Chess that Ron Weasley, Harry Potter and Hermione Granger play, that intelligent game becomes a pleasure 'cause of Potter. My friend has got this game and it's the most interesting, fun and wonderful game in world. In my point of view, this toy is durable, too. I am a school teacher and also the advisor of my school's chess team/tournament. Every child in my club saw the HP movie and was estatic when I brought out the Wizard Chess Board. They exclaimed that they had to play it. The desire to move those pieces were overwhelming to the tikes ranging from 7-12 years old. When I told them for the next year Tournament, I will give one away to the victor, the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th graders eyes were lit up with excitement. The 5th and 6th graders sighed with great and passionate disappointment for they were nolonger going to be in my school. My 5 yr old son, who learned to play chess this past year, was so excited to get this chess set from a friend. He is becoming a Harry Potter fan as we are now reading 'Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban'. The pieces seem durable enough although we don't leave them laying around when we are done. The pieces are much more representational and easier for kids to remember how each piece can move. It would be nice to have a bigger board because little hands knock the pieces over. I would recommend this for anyone that likes to play chess and is a Harry Potter fan.Customer Review: Solid chess set with a movie hook: perfect for young players

This is an excellent chess set for first-time, young players. The pieces are solid. They are easily distinguishable - a hard problem for new / young players: other sets often leave them asking "is that a pawn or a bishop?" They look exactly like the giant wizard chess set in the Sorceror's Stone. My advice to parents teaching children chess for the first time: don't try to start with the full game. My son and I started with a king and three pawns and worked up from there. It's generally much easier to engineer a draw with a smaller set of pieces, as well....
