Toys and Games Reviews of Disney Cars: Radiator Springs Mountain Challenge Track Set

Customer Review: My Kids Enjoyed This
Summary: 4 Stars

I was amazed at the design of this product. It's designed to be shaky, and when it's put together it actually works, which is more than I can say for some Hot Wheels kits. It wobbles as the car goes around, the car bounces off the rail and turns in the "spin out turn" as it's supposed to, and there is a spinning wheel that is turned by the shaking of the track. When you press a lever, the car goes through the wheel that has gaps that happen to be in the right place at the right time for the car to go through before dropping the car onto an arm that puts it on the ground.

I bought this product for my 6 yr old's birthday two weeks ago. My 7 yr old put it together and did a pretty good job (I had to make sure things were put together correctly otherwise the turn and wheel would not work right) and they have played with it ever since. It costs about the same as a comparable Hot Wheels kit. A negative is the difficulty finding other cars that work (it comes with 1 McQueen) - the product box shows some other characters but I can't find them at any store. The boys tried every Hot Wheel car that we own. We found a Boost and "Snot-Rod" pack ($5) (if you've seen the movie you know who they are) and the latter will work on the track.

Customer Review: A Year and a Half of FUN!
Summary: 4 Stars

This was all my son wanted for Christmas 2007. After reading all the negative reviews I was a little hesitant, but this was literally all he would ask for.

Christmas morning my husband had very little trouble getting it together and he was quite amazed at how well it was designed. It is rickety as many reviewers have mentioned, but that's what makes it work and what makes it fun. My son has had a blast with it for over a year now. All his friends love playing with it as well and they've all had fun trying to figure out which cars work best going through and watching the "duds" crash. After several months of play it did start getting a little "off" and the cars didn't quite make it all the way around, but the kids didn't care- they'd just push them through and keep going.

After about a year and a half I convinced my son that it was time to move on. As he and his friends have gotten older, they've also gotten rougher and now the thing just doesn't stay together any more. As we were hauling it out he said he'd just ask Santa for another one!

So, not a toy you'll hang on to to pass down to grandchildren years from now- but some great fun for the one's you have right now!

Customer Review: Not Pleased With This Toy
Summary: 1 Stars

My son received this toy as a birthday present and all I can say is thank goodness I didn't shell out the $40 for it because it would have been returned promptly. It took me a good while to get this thing put together. When you make a product for kids and they're chomping at the bit to play with the toy, it should come either partially assembled or at least be easy to assemble, but this one took concentration and lots of time to put together. Also, for such an expensive toy it only came with one vehicle, which my 3 boys were not really keen on sharing No problem, go and buy some extras, right? Nope, can't find them at any of the local stores. My other complaint is that the track is pretty flimsy. I think I'm going to have to end up gluing some of the parts together because I can't get them to stay together. I keep getting beckoned to the upstairs toyroom every two minutes because the track came apart ... AGAIN. I have always had great experiences with Mattel toys and my boys loved the Cars movie, but I am so frustrated with this toy. i think if I hadn't already thrown the box away, I would definitely try to return it I will be placing a call to Mattel's customer service to give them my opinion.

Customer Review: One Star is too much for this pile of garbage
Summary: 1 Stars

What a huge disappointment this toy is. After my kids watched the Fantastic MOVIE, they were hooked on Cars. They want all of the toy cars, the sheets, the video, the video game - the works. And for the most part, many of the other Cars items do not disappoint. However, Radiator Springs Mountain Challenge Track Set appears to be an example of corporate greed, exploiting the Cars enigma during the holiday (while it is hot), and taking advantage of the buying public. The instructions are a disaster (even for a Mechanical Engineer), the parts are cheaply made, the set does not assemble correctly (parts do not fit) and what parts you get together do not stay together as the set is very unstable. Our few test runs proved fruitless as the car (provided)never made it around the track - NOT EVEN ONCE. Product Development employees on this product are sure to be embarrased. What consumer can determine quality by looking at the box? If this were a significant consumer product other than a toy someone would consider class action. But, who would represent a group of age 5+ anyway???

Customer Review: Great toy for the money
Summary: 5 Stars

I think I paid $17 for this last summer - it was half off. I just put it together last night - wasn't too bad (30 minutes - taking my time). After reading other comments, I'm surprised at how well ours works. My son (6) played with it for around 1 hour last night with no problems. Granted, the only cars that seem to work well on it are Dirt Track McQueen (which it comes with) and regular Lightening McQueen. I will say this, when i was putting it together, I thought there is no way this is going to work. I sat there and watched Dirt Track McQueen go at least 30 times around before falling off the track. I was actually quite amazed at how well it worked. We did try some other cars and they didn't do well around the sharp curve. I would imagine all the McQueens will work fine. I'm happy with it and my son loves it so far. I'm not sure how the batteries will hold up. Takes 2 D's. I will say that he likes the Piston Cup 500 race track better - mainly because you can use just about any of the cars on it. That would be my only drawback, so far, on this item.
