Toys and Games Reviews of D-Rex Interactive DinosaurCustomer Review: D Rex Amazing fun for 5 year old boy Summary: 5 Stars
I was very hesitant to purchase a $150 toy that requires batteries as my experience has been that battery powered toys quickly end up in the corner and kid's lose interest when the batteries are dead and mom and dad lose interest in replacing them. I also thought it would get old quick. But my 5 year old boy wanted this from "Santa" more than anything else for Christmas so we rolled the dice and bought it. It has exceeded my expectations in most ways.
The toy is very realistic and has great facial expressions which are a bit freaky at first. My little boy has found ways to incorporate this toy into with his other toys, such as pretending the D-Rex is trying to attack his Star Wars figures and my little girl will borrow it and let her barbies take a ride on his back pretending that he is a "nice T-Rex". The autonomous nature of the D Rex makes this type of playing very fun as the movements and actions are unpredictable which enhances the feeling that it is a real creature rather than just a toy.
On the downside, it doesn't move around very much and ends up sitting in one place most of the time taking a couple of steps and then stopping for long periods of time. It doesn't recognize sound and light as well as I had hoped, but this is probably due to having the television or radio on in the background confusing the sensors. This doesn't really matter to my boy anyway who typically sits on the floor and plays with it so the fact that is doesn't move around quickly or often is fine for his style of play.
I don't know if they will eventually lose interest, but the realism and randomness of the D Rex has kept them playing with it daily since Christmas morning.
If you kid is imaginative and likes to be creative, they will use the toy in ways you never imagined. If they just like to drive around remote control cars, this will not satisfy them.
Customer Review: Get yourself a pet dinosaur Summary: 5 Stars
The dinosaur is smaller than I expected for the price. This sits about 20 inches tall and about 3 feet in length. This product uses 3 AAA batteries in the remote and 5 C batteries (which are not supplied). Get batteries with the toy or your child will be disappointed. You will need a Phillips screwdriver to undo the screws for the battery covers on the dinosaur and bone remote.
The 5 button remote has various modes: Guard, attack, seek, Yes and No Question and Answer and Prank buttons. It is shaped like a bone. It is solid and fits neatly into your pet's mouth.
The dinosaur is covered with a green rubber exterior with articulating extremities, tail, eyes and mouth. There are sensors on the head that sense petting and sensors in the mouth that detect what is in front.
The operation is simple for a child to work. The seek function is decent but it frequently sensed me (at a 90 degree angle) rather than my daughter (directly me in front). Prank button is entertaining with the 'burp' by the dinosaur. The yes/no function is random but funny. Guard function works pretty well, with the sensors activating the pet. Attack mode allows forward mobility and smoothly. The action and sound effects are realistic - except when you pet the dinosaur and he/she starts panting like a dog (I don't think a T-Rex pants like a dog - do you?). He will even chomp on whatever you place into his mouth.
Overall, the pet is amazing and its action is lifelife (based upon our imagination).
If you are looking for a virtual pet, this toy is worth a look.
Customer Review: mischievious fun!!! Summary: 5 Stars
I hesitated after reading through many reviews before finally deciding to buy this for my 8 yro son. It was his main Christmas request/gift & I really didn't want to have a large investment in a dud toy. My first surprise was the size. You just can't grip the dimensions until you view it first hand -- awesome! He's fun, funny & quite mischievious! Everyone in the house (2 adults & 5 children ages 12-7) loved this dino, well, with the exception of our german shepard who couldn't quite figure out if it was friend or foe LOL.
The texture & coloring of the "skin" are very lifelike as are the eye movements. The growls & laughs have everyone else rolling :-) My husband appeared to have shaved quite a number of years off & got down on the floor to play right along.
Recommend?: The only exception would be taking care to make certain the recipient is not the hmmmm distructive type. The dino seems sturdy enough but I'm not sure what would happen if it were handled or carried by it's head or tail. Overall I would certainly recommend this toy to anyone who is cosidering it.
Educational?: hmmmm LOL well, if you consider learning how to do a playful "prank" on someone educational LOL. I would personally count this as a total all out fun toy.
Have fun hehehehehehe - you just have to hear him laugh for yourself!! :-)
Customer Review: Keeping my fingers crossed Summary: 3 Stars
I bought this toy as my son's BIG Christmas gift and am keeping my fingers crossed that he will really like it, though I don't have much hope that this gift will provide more than 30+/- minutes of entertainment.
I can't comment on the durability outside of the "skin" feels like it could be easily torn.
Although it's facial expressions are kind of cute there were some immediately obvious issues (after 15 minutes of play)
- the remote only works at a distance closer than 8 feet
- slow to respond, leads to multiple remote button pushes
- the sensors have a very limited distance. You have to walk up to the dino for it to trigger in guard mode.
- slow speed when moving
- it lists to the left as it walks so it has a tendency to circle, which means it cannot "seek" you out.
- if it runs into something it does not back up
- a minor issue is the bone will not stay in it's mouth
It makes some cute (& not so cute) noises and it's facial expressions (when you can see them) are moderately endearing. It DOES walk on low pile carpet, still if I had to do it over again, I would wait for a second generation of d-rex (or pleo).
Customer Review: Ate My Kid Summary: 5 Stars
I got D Rex for my kid. He was real happy while it was still contained in it's box. I was happy to buy it for my son altough I had a difficult time paying off the loans I took out for D Rex. After selling my Vehicle to afford batteries for D Rex I was exicted to finally turn him on and wtach my sons eye light up with amazement!! However I was horrfied as to what happend next Rex came to life and started to eat my son I WAS PARALYZED WITH FEAR! I stood helpless while D Rex Ravaged my 3 year old! I then tried to shut D Rex off only losing my right hand in the scuffle. I then began to run luckly D Rex has not mastered walking forward correctly. After D Rex ran low on battery power I took him back to Toys R Us. I was very Angry YOU BET! I talked to the manager!! I now have 2 Loans, no Vehicle, and one partly digested 3 year old. Learning to type with my left hand is very difficult and not to mention using my face to click the mouse.
It's a Great Toy! just becareful and read the warnings!
