Toys and Games Reviews of Blokus Classics GameCustomer Review: Great fun for the entire family Summary: 5 Stars
My 10-year-old son asked for this for his birthday. He wanted to play with it immediately, so in order to pacify him, a few of us adults agreed to play with him. It didn't take long for us to see that this was not just a children's game. We soon had other family members looking over our shoulders, giving suggestions and patiently waiting for their turn to play. The only person who had difficulty with the game was a relative who is red-green color blind. He is able to see slight variations to adequately play other games with colored tokens, but because this game requires frequent visual scanning of the array of colors, it was too much of an effort for him to enjoy the game like the rest of us. Another word of caution is to keep track of all of the pieces (a feat for my family of 3 children). My sister suggested tracing or photocopying the pieces to use as extras when we undoubtedly lose the plastic pieces in the future!
Customer Review: How to play Blokus with two people Summary: 5 Stars
I want to start out by saying how much I love this game! It is so fun and so easy to learn, everybody should own it. I became interested in it after helping my son with some homework using pentominos. It is great mental exercise for spatial thinking and geometry. Like many other games you have to play defensively as well as offensively and to play well, you have to think several steps ahead.
Other reviewers are right about one thing...playing "one on one" is really cumbersome. That is, until now....here is the easy way to have a two player game. Only use a 14x14 part of the board! The entire board is 20x20 or 400 squares. By using a 14x14 section, you get 196 squares almost exactly half the area. I took a Sharpie and put a little line on the edge of the board so I know where my artificial edges are. Another way to have an easy two player game is to buy the Travel Blokus from our good friends at Amazon.com.
Customer Review: A lot of FUN Summary: 5 Stars
I'm a 20 year old college student who is bored of board games since many of them aren't intellectually stimulating. I ordered Blokus to play on rainy or snowed in days, it had very good reviews and was associated with Mensa. Overall I think that it is a brilliant, challenging game that requires thought. Since there are no cards in this game, you don't have to worry about repeat questions and you are certain that you will never have the same configuration with your pieces.
This game is fun to more fun to play with four, rather than two people. Since with two, you would have to control two colors. So if you are planning to play with two people, you might want to get the travel version, which is just the same game but with two colors, rather than four.
I have played this game with quite a few people, and I honestly never heard anyone dislike it. And that's coming from a rowdy snowed in college crowd!
Customer Review: LOVE THIS GAME!!!! Summary: 5 Stars
This is the best game we have purchased in a Loooong time! It has won many awards and so on, but I love the fact that we can all play as a family, and it can be as easy or difficult as you want it to be. My 6 yr old is very strategic and really plays this well- thinking through his moves. But in comparison my 5 year old has no real rhyme or reason as to how she plays her pieces, and she still seems to enjoy playing and actually does very well without really trying. We are actually considering getting the Blokus game that is done on the hexagon shaped board just to change things up a bit. I imagine that we will have this game forever, as it can change with the ability level of the players.
The board is sturdy as well as the plastic misc. shapes, so the game as well as the construction is great.
I would highly recommend this game! This game would be a great gift too!!! :)
Customer Review: Great game to play with kids of different ages Summary: 5 Stars
Perfect game for our family of four. Our 8 year old can't just try and beat his little sister by focusing on making it harder for her. (As he can with a game like Sorry.) He does that, he knows he can lose by letting the other two players have more freedom to place pieces.
Our 6 year old can use her natural smarts to her advantage without the handicap of just now learning the "value" of money or her lack of "killer instinct" when it comes to a game like Monopoly.
It's a great game because it requires thinking and isn't based on the luck of the dice.
We've given this as a gift to several kids and every parent thanks us afterward once they have a chance to play.
The only warning is to make sure you count every piece before playing. We had guests over and didn't realize they'd dumped out the box which meant we had to go searching for tiny yellow tiles.
