Toys and Games Reviews of Blokus Classics GameCustomer Review: Great Game Summary: 5 Stars
Being a mom, I'm always on the look out for a new form of family entertainment besides TV and movies. I read about this game in a magazine and then saw it demonstrated at a game store. We purchased the game as a family gift for Christmas and it's the best $30 I've spent in a long time. We have have been playing the game over and over, TV time is almost non-existant lately, the kids love the challenge of the game. My 11 and 6 year old caught on right away and my 3 year old is well on his way to being another family Blokus player. We were having so much fun with the game as a family that we brought the game to a New Years Eve party and everyone loved it. I highly suggest this game for all, young and old it's a game of fun and strategy that can be played by 2 or 4 easily.
Two tips:
1) Put your game tiles in plastic bags, you don't want to loose any of them
2) Lay the tiles on the table before you play so you can see the tiles you have available to play (don't play them out of the "holders").
Customer Review: Great game for 10 yo and whole family Summary: 5 Stars
We got this game for our 10 year old daughter who is difficult to buy for, not being interested in Bratz, etc. Our whole family loves to play. The adults are challenged, and so are the 10, 8, and 6 year olds. I love how it teaches strategy and helps kids learn to plan ahead for themselves and anticipate the moves others might make. Even our younger kids, ages 4 and 2, are entertained watching us because of the bright colors and interesting designs that are made on the board during play.
It really is easy to learn how to play. A bonus is that there are no batteries and it promotes family interaction. Even one of our kids who hates to lose enjoys playing because he can find success in placing some of the more difficult pieces.
One of the pieces did break in two shortly after we got it. We carefully super-glued it back together, and have enjoyed it trouble-free since then. Overall, a great buy. I would definitely get this game as a gift for our friends.
Customer Review: Good family fun Summary: 5 Stars
From reading the description of this game online I was a little confused what they meant by only allowing pieces to touch at the corners because it wasn't readily apparent to me that most of the pieces consist of multiple joined squares in various configurations (think tetrus). Having said that, once you see the game the rules are quite simple and can be learned in a few minutes. Adults can play a challenging game, but 2 adults can readily play with 2 kids because the adults will focus on blocking each other in and hence the [ignored] kids could well end up winning. Best with 4 players, but 2 works pretty well too.
Caveats: the playing pieces are bit flimsy, so kids who aren't careful could break some pieces, but replacement pieces are easily (and cheaply) available. Also, the scoring rules are a bit more complex than the playing rules, so when we play with kids we just say whoever is the last one able to make a move is the winner (and 2nd last one gets 2nd place, etc).
Customer Review: Kids bored? Play Blokus! Summary: 5 Stars
This was a "Santa" gift to our family. I have spent almost every day playing this (one-on-one), with my two boys ages 12 and 13. When one of them mentions being bored - I grab Blokus! My 13 year old learned real quick how to block mom and hog up the board for the win. (laughing) I loved seeing his brain at work and how he couldn't wait for me to finish my turn as he was already prepared for his next move. My 12 year old tried to cover one corner of the board quickly from the start and learned real quick that that was not a good strategy as mom easily blocked him from doing more. We haven't played this as a family yet due to my husband's busiest time at work but we plan on playing it on New Year's Eve. You can also play this by yourself which is something I have yet to try but will since I'm a puzzle person.
This is educational due to the strategy involved. It's great for the brain to be actively involved in puzzle games.
Fun Game! Worth the price!
Customer Review: Simple concept - complex strategy Summary: 5 Stars
The game Blokus is easy enough, but in practice it is much more difficult and therefore much more fun to play. A friend of mine bought it and brought it into my college. Suddenly, its THE thing to play in the commuter lounge. There are mnay different strategies you can pursue and each one offers its own unique challenges, especially when the other players throw a wrench in the works. Requires a lot of planning ahead, flexibility, level-headedness, and effeciency. Get this game and you won't be disappointed.
The only drawback is that to really recieve full enjoyment, you need to have four players. This isn't too much of a problem, as it isn't hard to get your friends hooked into the game. As much as it makes you think, its pure fun.
If you still aren't convinced, head over to the official website and try to play it online (its free). You won't be disappointed, though the computer AI is a little tough to get a hang of if you've never played before.
