Toys and Games Reviews of Blokus Classics Game

Customer Review: An instant hit at our house!
Summary: 5 Stars

We opened this early Christmas eve when we and the visitors - adult daughter and her friend - were at the point when everyone had run out of news and other things to occupy the time. We all needed a diversion. Boy did this game fit the bill! We are in our 60s, and my daughter and friend in their 20-30s, but it was a game all ages could really get into. I suspect it would well down to early teen or younger. All through the game my daughter's friend kept exclaiming, "We're getting this as soon as we get home!" Every free moment for the rest of this visit was involved in playing Blokus. My daughter and her friend were so enthusiastic we finally offered to let them take the game home since it was clear they'd be inviting everyone over to it.
High points are that games are short enough, even with 4 players, that no one get's bored (maybe 20 minutes or so with 4 playing), nor stuck playing a game they need to or want to leave. You can play nicely with 2, 3 or 4 people, though I think 4 likely works best. But beware "mature" folks - your kids can likely beat the pants off you!

Customer Review: Excellent for ALL ages ...
Summary: 5 Stars

I LOVE this game, but you really need to play it to appreciate it. The box says it's for ages 5 and UP and I support that whole-heartedly. I've played with kids as well as a 'parents only' game ;)

I first saw Blokus set up at a very small "hands-on" kind of toy store in a vacation area. I don't know that the box itself would have attracted me to it ... I bought one and played it w/ my kids (6 and 8) and other families staying in the same area. One other family purchased it after playing and another said they probably would ... it's that good!!

The kids (and adults, too) grasp the rules IMMEDIATELY, the complexities and subtleties are revealed as you play. The more you play the more you learn.

It's a good game for developing concepts of spacial relationships, and 'building bridges' to change the course of play. You also learn to play offensively as well as defensively.

According to the box, it's gotten several toy awards as well as some sort of nod from Mensa ... it's really a GOOD all-around family game and I highly recommend it.

Customer Review: entertaining, strategical game that you'll end up playing for hours!

I saw my coworkers playing the duo version of this game at work one day. Then this one was in the amazon gold box deal for $9.99. I purchased it and tried it out with the girlfriend two nights ago. We became addicted immediately. We then took it to a house party on new year's eve. It kept us busy for hours! Lots of fun. You start off from your corner and try to expand toward the center, claiming your territory and, at the same time, try to defend yourself from being blocked by your opponents. This game is fit for all ages, from kids to seniors. It makes you use your brain and keep it active. Try to think ahead; try to think what pieces you want to place in the open spaces. Think about where to put your pieces to expand your colors or prevent your opponents from surrounding you. I think we got a few people addicted to this game last night. This is a great buy! There are 21 small plastic game pieces for each of the 4 colors. If you're not careful, it might be easy to lose a piece and I wonder if the plastic can be easily cracked. Other than that, there are no concerns.

Customer Review: Great Game!

I had never heard of Blokus before coming to the Amazon.com website. Read the reviews and product info and figured I'd give it a try for my niece (6) and nephew (9) for Christmas. It was such a hit - not only with the kids, but also the adults. The premise of Blokus is to get rid of all your pieces by placing them on the board only touching the corner of your own pieces. (You can touch any other person's piece, doesn't matter how). Sounds simple, but the pieces are all in odd shapes of 1 to 5 boxes. Some are straight, some form a corner, one is a box shape, etc. The board is made of sturdy plastic base with raised indentations making the placement of pieces easier and keeps them from shifting around while playing. This game combines strategy, thinking skills, planning, and sometimes pure luck. The best part is that each time you play, the game changes since each player choses the placement of their own pieces, and you have to work around them, the board will never look the same. I highly recommend this game for kids and adults alike.

Customer Review: Fun For the Whole Family
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this game along with a batch of other games for the holidays to have for family and friends to play after meals and by far, it was the one that received the most play time over Thanksgiving. I wanted to have games that had quick rounds (~20-30 minutes) so that everyone could play and rules that were easy to learn and explain. It's a great little game to have on your shelf as it's easy to jump in and play and easy for players of all ages to enjoy.

While the concepts seem simple at first blush, the great thing about Blokus is that there's really no one right way or one right strategy to winning the game and everyone has a chance to win a round because of the dynamic nature of the game.

My wife and I bust it out and play two-player rounds by the fire once in a while as well.

If you like this type of game, I'd also recommend Rumis which is very similar to this game by plays in 3-dimensions instead of 2. It's another great game that's easy for players of all ages to jump into and play.
