Toys and Games Reviews of Blokus Classics GameCustomer Review: We've Played for Years! Great for Most Ages Summary: 5 Stars
We've had Blokus for at least 5 years and we still love it. It is a game of strategy for two to four players.
The object of the game is to place as many (or all) of your plastic tiles on the Blokus board. The only rule is that you can only place your next tile corner to corner with one of your other pieces. So as more pieces get placed, there is less room to put your pieces (and less space for your opponents as well).
Each tile has a point value so at the end of the game, the bigger and the mroe tiles you have left, the higher your score. The person with the lowest score (and therefore the most tiles placed) wins.
My daughter started playing when she was four and has developed a better strategy watching others play and has grown a little older (she is now 6). My 11-year old is a tough player and understands the intricacies of placing his tiles while blocking my moves.
It takes great spacial thinking and strategy.
There are a lot of little pieces. When we are done playing we use a Ziploc baggies to put the tiles in by color so that the next time we want to play, they are all ready to go and we aren't missing any of them.
If you want to play with only two players, each player can use two color sets. If you want to play with three players, each player takes turns placing a tile from the unused color set. That way, the board still fills in.
This is a great price. When I originally bought it (and many additional sets as presents) it was never offered at a discount.
Customer Review: Huge hit right out of the box for our family ages 4-60 Summary: 5 Stars
Thank you Blokus!
We have a multi generational living situation in our home and had decided collectively to play more games as a family. I bought this as a gold box deal during the holiday season 2009. The price was sixty percent off of Amazon's listed retail price. The discount caught my eye but it was the 4 and 5 star reviews by over 400 people that sold me immediately. We got around to playing it today and we all had a blast.
The first game was played by myself, my four year old son, and my mother whose left side (and right brain) has been paralyzed by a stroke. The tiles take a delicate hand to place. Perfect for fine motor skills for both my 4yo and my mom! A lot of forethought and strategy involved. My 4 year old won the first game with the help of both his mother and his grandmother. My 10 year old beat me the rest of the night.
Everyone that did play really enjoyed the game. I hope I can update this review when my 16yo and husband play. I have no doubt they will both enjoy it. If it goes back down to the price I paid during the gold box deal I will stock up and give this game as gifts to my siblings, in laws, and their families. Perfect as a hostess gift or a housewarming gift too!
For two players the instructions state to use all four sets of tiles. One player could easily play with the goal of placing all the tiles. As a matter of fact I should go do that now. I have to beat my 10yo.
Customer Review: Good, fun game...but if you lose a piece..... Summary: 4 Stars
We got this game because the reviews were excellent. It IS a good game, but I don't think it's quite the total sensation others do. I do recommend it - our just-turned-five-year-old can play it with us, although we have to help her out a little. It's fun and does force spatial reasoning, and a game is over with fairly quickly. I'd rather be horse-whipped than made to play Monopoly, but that's just me.
[...]. We did this but I used four large elastic bands that we can put on/move/take off depending upon number of players rather than a Sharpie because for some reason I just didn't want to draw on the game board. We actually enjoy it more as a 2 or 3 player game rather than each person playing two colors. It all just seemed to come together better. Thanks, other reviewer!~!
I don't think it was really a very good value for the money - plain cardboard board - dinky plastic pieces - but I think most board games are a huge rip-off, aren't they? A little "tray" of some sort for each player to put their pieces on would be a nice addition, because if you lose even one of the pieces, it will screw up the outcome. I am sure the replacement pieces are available for a "reasonable" price, plus s&h from the manufacturer!
Overall, a fun game to add to the stash, but it doesn't beat out my all-time favorite, Connect Four!
Customer Review: Definitely not for the very young, child needs to be at least 5 maybe more Summary: 4 Stars
Since this is review #400 something, I'll get to my point. Most games, you can safely ignore the age range. For example, Connect 4 says 7+, but my 4 year old loves it. With connect 4, he doesnt have any real strategy yet, but gets trying to get 4 in a row. Blokus isnt like that, dont ignore the lower age limit of 5. My four year old just cant get Blokus at all, and its very very painful to watch. We have tried several times, but it seems that the brain wiring for it isnt in yet. My seven year old (who is ahead of her class in most ways) got how to move in her first game, and picked up some strategy in her second game. I have my doubts that my son will be ready for it at 5, but maybe some 5 yr olds can get it.
If you want another strategy game that can be enjoyed by a child younger than 5, Connect 4, Othello and Pente are my top choices. (Pente does have small and numerous pieces.) Blokus, not so much.
UPDATE: After trying several times, my son (4 1/2 now) has mostly managed to get how to move properly. I still think 4 1/2 is too young, but he definitely seems to have learned something which is very cool...we could not seem to help him understand corner to corner placement...he would not get it...then after a few games, something clicked in his brain between games.
Customer Review: Wrong Parts, Customer Service No Help Summary: 1 Stars
I suppose that this might be a fun toy if it came with the correct parts, but I have no way of knowing. The game came with too many red parts and not enough green parts (i.e., 3 bags of red, only one bag of green). This should seem like a fairly straightforward problem to a company that makes a puzzle game, but when I called the 24/7 "customer service" line, the gentleman spent about 10 minutes trying to assure me that this was impossible. I sat down and counted every single part of every single color with him on the phone to assure him that this was not impossible. Instead of simply saying that he would send me the right parts, he said that he would have to have somebody get back to me. I guess this was too puzzling for "Educational Insights". Instead of somebody calling me back, I received an e-mail saying that I should call Mattel for replacement parts. (Huh?) I called Mattel at the number provided in the e-mail, and they had no idea what I was talking about or why I would be told to call Mattel (as I assumed would be the case). I wrote back to the person that sent me the e-mail to advise her that Mattel had no clue, but I never received a response. Save your money. If the game arrives in unplayable condition you will be stuck without help from customer service.
