Toys and Games Reviews of Barbie Mariposa Magic Wings Mariposa Doll

Customer Review: Beautiful, but complicated for 4 year olds.
Summary: 4 Stars

My 4-year-old daughter received this doll for Christmas, and we were all fascinated by how beautiful and majestic it was with the wings on. When she's played with it in public places, she attracted lots of new friends who want to see the doll. Even now, a month later, it's one of her favorite dolls to play with. She has never been able to put the wings on by herself because the plastic coupling is complicated for a 4-year-old, but I've been able to snap them on pretty easily, and my 9-year-old niece has also figured it out after some practice. The wings seem surprisingly durable, even after accidentally bending the opposite direction they were meant to when stuffed in her backpack. The plastic coupling where wings connect to doll has been surprisingly strong too. The way the wings act is an awkward design feature - the wings fold in a couple of places and snap together so they are about half-size, and there is a button on the back of the doll that releases the wings so they open to full size, but only if the doll's arms are out of the way - best if arms are extended straight above her head. These days my daughter prefers to leave the wings off because they get in the way of the doll's ability to sit in barbie cars, but no other barbie is as unique as this doll, so it's still my daughter's favorite.

Customer Review: Nice doll, but I'd pick the one with smaller wings
Summary: 4 Stars

My daughter has never seen the Mariposa movie, but fell in love with this doll because it's a fairy and a Barbie--the best of both worlds as far as she's concerned. We've had the doll about a month now and haven't had any problems with the wings just "falling off." They do come off if the doll bumps hard enough against something or if they're twisted just so, but definitely no falling off the doll with the slightest movement. They seem to snap onto the back of the doll quite snugly, but perhaps they will wear over time?

I do have to say though, that if I had it to do over again I wouldn't have bought this doll--I would have bought the Barbie Fairytopia Mariposa Doll which has much, much smaller wings. Unfortunately I didn't realize a version with smaller wings was available until I already bought the Magic Wings one. The only reason I'd buy the one with smaller wings is that even my daughter finds the size of the large wings annoying sometimes. Often she'll leave the wings at home or in the car when we go out, because although she wants to take her pretty doll with her, she doesn't want to deal with those huge wings!

Customer Review: Design flaw on the wing assembly
Summary: 3 Stars

As others have noted, there seems to be a design flaw on the wing. Once the curved sockets on the wing hooks onto the body, you're supposed to pull the wing forward where a little retention clip on the wing snaps into the body (this is hard to describe in a review!) Well, it just wouldn't clip, leaving the wing wobbly and unable to be played with without it falling off immediately. Upon inspection, there was a little extra bit of plastic blocking the wing from coming forward enough to engage the retention clip. It's clearly not intended to be there.

Fortunately, a little surgery on the back assembly worked. I used an exacto knife to hew off the plastic bit protruding out and once I did, the wing snapped in securely as it was clearly intended to do.

Long-awaited fifth birthday present salvaged and I have one happy little girl who is now snoozing with her arm around her new Mariposa doll.

I will post a picture of what I did in case it helps others, assuming I can find a time when said five year old is not hugging it.

Customer Review: Wings are a nuisance!!
Summary: 2 Stars

Age of child VERY IMPORTANT.
My daughter was about 4 when I bought this for her. Yes, I read all the reviews about the wings always falling off, but I bought it anyway.
The wing span is quite large and a child's arms at 4 are too short to make this a viable gift for that age child.
The button to flip open the wings is like a magnet to a young kid. My daughter just would not stop closing the wings, turning the doll to the back, pushing the button, and turning the doll to the front, over and over again. The problem was her arms were too short to not to touch and knock off the wings at some point in her play.
I did cut off pieces of the back with an exacto knife like one man said. I did glue the wings onto the back.
All efforts failed.
The newer version has the wings minuscule, which does not make the toy look like fun.
My suggestion is to buy this toy for perhaps 5 year olds and above. At least a child who can be careful about the way she plays with the doll.

Customer Review: Mariposa?...Mari-NO-sa!!! (Part Deuce)
Summary: 1 Stars

This is my second attempt to warn parents everywhere to not purchase this gal. Don't let her big browns fool ya- she will release her wings within ten minutes of withdrawing from her cocoon-box. She is the Titanic of the doll world. Upbeat side note: I purchased this doll at Wal-mart in October 2008 and it was then given to my kid at X-mas time. We then returned this doll at least 1.5 weeks after the New Year (January 2009). I am a Target chick at heart, but Wal-mart has great return policies. They gave us our money back, even after all that time had passed. And yes, you can return toys that are just plain sucky...I used to think that you were not allowed to do that, but the ordeal with this doll has proven that maxim wrong!
