Toys and Games Reviews of Balderdash GameCustomer Review: Fun, educational, and hilarious word game Summary: 5 Stars
Balderdash is a great game that combines wordsmithing and bluffing. To begin, each player rolls the dice to determine who will be the dasher first. The dasher then draws a card, reads the balderdash word to the players, and spells the word. None of these words are ones used in everyday language. (Examples include fleer, runnel, pontage, etc.) Each player jots down a phony definition that sounds credible (or, if you happen to know the real definition, write it down instead), and gives the slip of paper to the dasher. And then the hilarity begins. The dasher must attempt to read each definition and the real one without showing any emotion ... which is much more difficult than it sounds! Some of the phony definitions are hilarious, and often the real definition is too. After all definitions have been read, the dasher asks each player which definition is the correct one, noting that player's choice on the slip of paper. At the conclusion of the round, the players who chose the correct definition move two spaces on the board. The players who received votes for their phony definitions move one space for every vote. And, if no player guesses the correct definition, the dasher moves forward three spaces on the board. For subsequent rounds, each player takes a turn as the dasher. This game is fun, educational, and incredibly hilarious. Someone will crack up with laughter in every round!
Customer Review: The best party game out there Summary: 5 Stars
Balderdash is simply the best party game there is. It is extremely flexible in that it allows for fun gameplay with many different numbers of players and ages of players, and it is also a game where experience won't necessarily give you an advantage. The point is to come up with bogus definitions to a difficult vocabulary word no one will know, and to get other players to vote for your fake definition. The game is somewhat educational -- you're bound to pick up a few words from playing it that you can show off, and has great replay value -- even though there's a finite number of cards, trying to remember the real definitions is impossible! Hilarity always ensues when we play this game; you invariably wind up with some really out-there stuff as people try to make up definitions under limited time, and there are always a few submissions that have us rolling on the floor. Of course, sometimes the real definition is the weirdest of them all! Balderdash is the perfect game for any party -- people learn quickly, get really into it, and you can play for as many or as few rounds as you'd like... though our games usually go on for quite some time! This game is addictive, but in a good way. No party game collection is complete without a copy of Balderdash!
Customer Review: I liked the 2nd version much better. Summary: 3 Stars
In the beginning there was a game called Balderdash. To avoid confusion, I'll refer to it as Balderdash 1. I first played it with some friends in Ohio about twelve years ago. In Balderdash 1, the players were given an obscure word which they had to guess the meaning of or trick the other players into "voting" for their definition.
Then a "sequel" came out called Beyond Balderdash. Balderdash 2 was a huge improvement over Balderdash 1. Balderdash 2 still had words, but it expanded the categories to include People (who was Sherwood Schwartz?), Initials (what does NRSV stand for), Movies (what is Eegah about?), and Dates (what happened on September 1, 1939?).
And a few years ago, a third version of Balderdash came out. Like the first version it is also called Balderdash. Balderdash 3 has replaced the Dates with Laughable Laws (In Cincinnati, Ohio, it is against the law to wear _________ ? The answer may be anything from "...a bulletproof vest to church" to "...a stetson while snorkeling."). In my opinion, the Dates were much better and much funner than the Laughable Laws.
So if you can find an inexpensive version, I recommend Balderdash 2 -- or Beyond Balderdash as it is officially called.
Customer Review: Balderdash: A hard-to-find, but FANTASTIC word game. Summary: 5 Stars
"Balderdash", a game which many people have never heard of, and others THINK they have, oh, many years ago, (as they scratch their heads, and try to remember exactly when) is, in my humble opinion, one of the most enjoyable (and challenging) games around. (Actually, it isn't "around" very much, as I have gone into store after store to try and find it, without success).
Very simply put, the game challenges players to try to fool their fellow players into coming up with believable-sounding definitions for really, really obscure words. (And I mean obscure as the dickens here, folks). One person (the "runner" who is essentially "it"), has the actual definition--that person can either use the actual definition, or create one of his own. The idea in coming up with your own definition is to try to convince your fellow players that yours is the correct one. For everyone who guesses your definition, (as opposed to the real one, or another player's made-up definition), you score points. The person with the most points (the biggest "flim-flam" artist, to put it politely) wins. A good vocabulary does help here, plus an ability to keep a straight face when your definition is being read. Great game. Really tests the brain!
Customer Review: Great for what it is: a party game Summary: 5 Stars
Balderdash is probably the best game in its genre: light, party game. Balderdash was created by veteran game designers Laura Robinson ("Identity Crisis") and Paul Toyne ("Beyond Balderdash") and is published by the ubiquitious Parker Brothers Games.
In Balderdash, players are read a word, a person's name or a movie title. Players then secretly write down a false answer depending on what was read. If a word is the topic, players make up false definitions; if a person's name is selected, players make up a false "claim-to-fame"; if a movie title is chosen, players make up a false synopsis. The false answers are collected by the player whose turn it currently is. That player reads the false answers along with the correct answer. Players, in turn order, attempt to guess which answer is correct. If you guess correctly, you score points. If you guess someone else's false answer, they score points.
Balderdash is a great game of creativity and bluffing. It can really get the creative juices flowing. For what it is (a light party game), I give it 5*****. If you are looking for a serious strategy game, you will have to look elsewhere.
