Oops. No. That's Othello.

But the same applies.

Here's my Top Ten List of the 10 Best Things About Apples to Apples.

10. The rules of the game can be explained in three sentences or less.

9. It works for a small intimate group, or an overflow crowd at the Thanksgiving table. There's no boring wait time.

8. There are so many cards, the odds of getting a repeat are slim.

7. The game can be reconfigured in several ways, should anyone ever get tired of the first approach.

6. It can be played by a drunk crowd, a sober crowd, a young crowd, and old crowd, a totally mixed crowd.

5. No element of throat-cutting competitiveness.

4. You can play to win or you can play to amuse.

3. The loser doesn't feel like a loser.

2. The winner is unlikely to leap on the table dancing and screaming "I won, I won!"

1. It will make everyone laugh. It will make you laugh. Does life get any better than that?

Customer Review: Great Fun For Families and Friends
Summary: 5 Stars

"Apples to Apples" is a simple game of comparisons. In five minutes, both the rules and the genius of the game are clear. Each round requires a new judge to pick which anonymous answer is the best, and the player who provided that answer gets a point. The beauty of the game is its subjectivity; there are no right answers. It's up to the judge to decide whether the answer of "snakes" is better than the answer of "Michael Jackson" when the category is "terrifying.

Players are limited in the number of words they can play by random draw and are thus required to fit some square pegs into round holes and hope the judge sees the brilliance of their reaching metaphor.

Each round inspires discussion and playful arguments (maybe not so playful for super competitive players). The greatest feature is that (a la The Newlywed Game), people who know each other tend to supply answers to "inside jokes" that the judge will recognize. When I was the judge, someone played a "cockroach" card when the topic was "annoying". The person playing the card knows I have been battling an insect problem for some time and thus won the point "playing the judge".

Such nuance turns playing this simple game into a very enjoyable experience (although some of that is lost when played by strangers).

Customer Review: Fun for Everyone

Apples to Apples / B00112CHCK

"Apples to Apples" is one of those rare games that is fun for any group of people, regardless of their usual gaming preferences. It's the sort of game that's perfect for parties and family reunions because it will appeal just as much to your hard-core, Carcassonne-playing, European-game-loving gamer as it will to the person who avoids everything other than solitaire.

The other beauty in "Apples to Apples" is that it can be explained so quickly - literally, it never takes more than two or three rounds for everyone in the room to catch on to what they are doing. When we bring the game out, in fact, we don't even bother with the explanations - we just pass out the cards, and tell everyone to throw down a card for the first round - by the end of the "judging", everyone has caught on completely.

I highly recommend "Apples to Apples" as great fun for the whole family. It's even educational - it's rare to play a game where someone doesn't learn a fun new word. The only down-side is that this is definitely a "group" game - you'll want at least four people for this, and the more the better.

Customer Review: Fun for large groups
Summary: 5 Stars

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
This is a great party game for a large, diverse group! It's easy to get people involved - even people who normally avoid party games - because:
* The gameplay is very simple. A quick description is enough to get everyone going.
* It's not intimidating - nobody ever looks "dumb" for not having the "right" answer, since there is no one right answer.
* It's fun! People are laughing and enjoying themselves, which brings the nonplayers over to see what's going on. It can get loud and silly.
* It's short - 30 minutes or so, so a new round occurs fairly frequently.
* It's easy to add another player (or swap players) mid-stream.

This game is not designed for kids, but they can play with some modifications. My 6 year old likes to partner up with an adult, who will explain the cultural references that he might not know yet. It wouldn't be my first choice game for a group of primarily kids, but if there is a kid or two at an adult party they can be included.

Customer Review: It used to be fun
Summary: 3 Stars

I have played Apples to Apples many times, and each time I play it, it gets less and less fun. The game was hilarious the first time I played with friends, and it was rather fun to play several times afterward as well. It is also a good ice-breaker game. However, it seems like at every party or when friends would come over, we would play Apples to Apples. I think that since the game is simplistic, it runs out of fun rather quickly, even with the variations. The fun part of playing is coming up with ironic noun/adjective combinations, but after a while it gets old to be matching Helen Keller with "insert adjective here". Some of the card parings are really funny, but after playing the game for a while, you see similar combinations, and they become less funny/amusing/entertaining.

I think that it's fun when you are picking the nouns for your adjective card, but even then it gets old. The rest of the time, you are hoping that you don't end up with boring nouns and no one picks your card.

I guess if you like games that require no thought and are extremely repetitive, or you are only planning to play this game once every couple of parties/etc, then I guess you'll like Apples to Apples.
