Toys and Games Reviews of Apples to Apples Party Box - The Game of Hilarious ComparisonsCustomer Review: fun, easy to learn Summary: 5 Stars
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
We've played the children's version and had fun, so I wanted to try the regular, 12&up version. The party box set comes with *a lot* of cards. This is great, because more cards offer the opportunity for more interesting combinations. Also, if people have played an earlier version a lot, the huge amount of cards ensures that the game "stays fresh."
My 6 favorite things about the game:
1. Good for any personality type - even ultra-competitive people
This game won't lead to tense moments or hard feelings like some can, and even "non-game people" seem to enjoy it.
2. You never feel stupid.
Since there aren't any right or wrong answers, and it isn't trivia or knowledge-based, there's no risk of feeling less than brilliant.
3. Great for holiday/family gatherings
A great icebreaker for groups of people, especially useful as the holidays approach.
4. Easy to learn
A 30 second explanation works for most new players.
5. Funny/humorous
We end up laughing a lot at some of the "creative" ways players connect their red apple card to the green apple idea card.
6. Not too long
Depending on how many players you have, the length of the game does vary, although there are options on the rule card to keep it short. Any way you play it, though, this isn't a marathon, check-your-watch, isn't-this-thing-done-yet kind of game.
Customer Review: Fun for the Whole Family Summary: 5 Stars
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
"Fun for the Whole Family." How is that for a cliched title? But in this case, it's an apt title. "Apples to Apples" is one of those games that *everyone* seems to have played and enjoyed before I had even heard of it. I went to the toy store recently and they had stacks and stacks of this game. I just had to try it out.
And it seems there is good reason that this game is garnering so much positive attention. It truly is a lot of fun. Though you probably do not want to play it with kids who are below their teenage years, teens and adults will have a great time with it. It's one of those games where there are no wrong answers--just varying degrees of right ones. The trick is to be clever or funny in drawing comparisons. I guarantee you'll be laughing and having fun in no time.
Part of the beauty of the game is that it requires little setup and little formality. You can play it at a moment's notice and with as large a crowd as you want to (within reason, of course). You can play around the table or in the car. It is perhaps passably educational but primarily just plain fun.
If you snoop around the Internet a little bit you can find some videos that show you exactly how it's played. If you're uncertain of whether this is a game you want to try, check out the videos to see what it's all about--it will probably help you more than reading a written description.
Buy it, enjoy it, have fun.
Customer Review: Incomparable Fun Summary: 5 Stars
I was introduced to this game a year ago and fell in love with it. It's great for kids and adults and sure to provide plenty of fun.
Each player has seven red cards in their hand. They have actions or nouns on them. Things like "Charging Rhinos," "James Bond," "Paying Taxes," "Mirror," or "Walt Disney."
Each round has a judge. The judge turns over the top green card, which contains an adjective like creative, handsome, feminine, horrid, scary, etc. Each player then picks the card from their hand they feel best matches the green card and plays it face down. Now the fun starts. The judge picks the red card he or she feels best matches the green card. Obviously, there are some loosers since it's hard with seven cards to always match everything. But there are usually some good options as well. Once the winner of that round has been chosen, they take the green card and then become the judge of the next round.
Obviously, the more you know about the people you're playing with, the better off you'll be. And the funnier it can get. And you'll get to know other people quickly this way.
So what makes the Party Box Edition different from the regular version? This box contains not only the original cards, but also the cards that are in the first two expansion packs. You get twice the number of cards as the original box for only a little higher price. More fun. More outrageous comparisons. What's not to like?
This really is a game that kids and adults can play together and keep everyone entertained and competitive. And it's rather addicting. I can't wait to play it again.
Customer Review: Always a Hit - You Can't Go Wrong Summary: 5 Stars
Everyone I have ever played this game with loves it. They even request it that I bring it to their houses or that we play it when I have people over for dinner.
The simplicity of this game is part of its beauty. The game is simply this: there are red apple cards, which contain nouns, such as Elvis Presley or spit. There are green apple cards, which contain adjectives, such as delicate or greedy. Players compete to play red apple cards to match the green apple card played. The judge decides which one is the most clever or fitting, and players take turn being the judge. It's completely subjective, but that's part of the fun! If the judge chooses your card, you win that round and get the green apple card. The person with a predetermined number of green apple cards wins.
Some of the best things about this game:
-the funny quotes on the cards
-the banter that is encouraged between players and the judge
-the competition to get more than one card played (players can play 1-2 cards, but there is a limit on the amount of cards played - a player or players can be shut out of the round)
-it's not a dragged-out game
-it's different every time
-it has a number of fun variations on the original game
-there are a ton of cards in this box - probably won't need an expansion set for a while!
Some of the downfalls:
-only 4+ players can play
-the cards are a little flimsy - I can see them being quickly damaged, especially in the rush to lay down cards
Overall, a fun, unique and essential addition to my game collection!
Customer Review: Hilarious fun for kids and adults Summary: 5 Stars
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
This is one of our family's favorite games. Our kids are 17, 14, and 7 and we've been playing it since the older ones were 9 and 6. If you've never played, the game goes like this: Each card has 1 word or phrase on it, and they vary from things like 'snowflake' to 'irritated' to 'Fourth of July.' Each person is dealt a set of cards from one deck. Then, one by one, players take turns being the 'judge.' Their job is to turn over 1 card from a different deck to reveal its word or phrase to the rest of the players. Each player, except the judge, chooses a card from their hand that best matches the meaning of the card that was revealed. The judge then decides which card is the best match, and the player whose card was chosen as the best match then gets to keep his card and the card it matched. The player with the most such pairs at the end is the winner. Sometimes the matches are obvious; if the chosen word to match was 'scary', a judge may choose a player's card that has 'halloween' as the winning match. But, it depends upon the judge and the players as to what the best "match" really is, and that's where the fun comes in. For example, in some families, a better match for 'scary' could be 'my cousin' or 'meatloaf' or 'mushrooms' or 'the basement,' etc.
It's really a great game that helps kids learn vocabulary without feeling like they're playing an educational game.
