I bought this as a present for my 6 year old son, I wanted something for him to do other than play video games all day. The pen doesnt work and I would suggest you take it out before you set up the beads bc he ended up seeing the pen, wanting to fill it, then discovering that the beads wouldnt come out and ended up fliping it upside down shaking the beads out for half and hour. once you make a pic of beads with one of the templets, spray with the water until its completely shiny, let dry, flip over and spray the other side until shiny as well, it holds better. He loved the petting zoo version better (its not so girly) but definatly buy the refill beads, they go really fast. Pros:
Kids can do it by themselves, no ironing required.
Inspires creativity and dexterity.
Cons:
Pen is worthless - time consuming to fill and does not function properly
Must spray projects multiple times. Long dry times.
Difficult to remove projects from boards without breakage.
Very few patterns included.
Need to buy a lot of refill beads.
Bottom line:
Somewhat fun, somewhat frustrating for kids. I would not repurchase. I would rather stick to our usual and just do the ironing for the perler beads. Get a small crafting iron and it is less fuss.

My 6 year old daughter asked for Pixos for Christmas. I started reading the reviews on them and they weren't positive at all. I came across the Art-tastic beads while doing the research and the reviews on it were much better so I ordered them. I also ordered a refill set. My daugher really likes them. The pen is a disappointment so we ended up placing them with our fingers. I agree that the sorting tray does not work very well. Too easy to knock over and the beads go everywhere. But they do dry quickly, there is little mess to deal with, refills are easy to find and not expensive and she enjoys it so I would recommend them.Customer Review: Great product for a much lower price than it's competition!

I ordered this for my 10 yr old daughter for Christmas instead of the incredibly overpriced "Pixos" version. I was a little worried it might not work as great, but to my suprise it was wonderful. My daughter really loved making her own creations, it comes with lots of accessories and everything you could need. I also recommend you get the refill pack to go with it, it's inexpensive and the two items together will bring hours and hours of fun. The parts to this are "Plastic", so eventually pieces are bound to break, etc...but I think it is just as good a product as the name brand ones at a much lower price!!!
