Toys and Games Reviews of Art-tastic Magic Beads Under The Sea Medium PlaysetCustomer Review: Better than melting wax with iron, but needs improvement Summary: 2 Stars
I bought this as my 2 preschoolers love to make pictures using the old fashion wax beads that you'd have to melt with an iron to make them stick.
I was hoping this set with a pen would eliminate frustration and me having to pull out the iron everytime. When I opened the package, the pen was already broken, that tells you how durable this product is. More like dollar store quality.
I was still able to use the pen dispenser. The pen works alright for a grown up but the kids still get frustrated sometimes as it can get caught. It took more than 20 minutes for the beads to fuse. The bonding isn't very strong either, so a small twist would make the beads unlink in the finished product. I also found out that the bead links will undo if you put it under water (this set's theme IS under the sea, but you'll have to keep it away from water!).
The storage tray is a total joke as the lid doesn't snap over the container and the beads won't stay in the slots so the colors will get mixed up. Not something you'll want to travel with. you're better off with tupperware from the dollar store.
I will have to continue using the old fashion wax and iron set as the finished product is so much more durable and resistant to water as well as allow the kids to work on their pincer grasps. This method is so much cheaper also.
I will keep this set for the convienance of not needing an iron on those days where I just don't want to take it out. There isn't enough beads to do a whole lot, so you'll have to buy more refills. I have to say the beads are prettier than the wax method. Also, the iron method sometimes melts the original template, but this water method won't have that problem.
Overall, it's definitely not worth $19, not even the $6 I paid, maybe $4 as you have to realize the only thing that works in this kit are the 2 plastic templates, semidependable pen and beads. You'll have to buy more beads to make this kit last longer, otherwise, it's really a disposable toy.
