Toys and Games Reviews of Manhattan Toy WinkelCustomer Review: First toy our 10 week old son actually played with Summary: 5 Stars
I found out about this toy on a parenting forum where some mom wrote "I melted my son's Winkel!" after a few chuckles about the obvious "what that *could* have been referring to" I went and looked at the product itself and after hearing other parent comments about how much their little person enjoyed this I decided I would get one for our little boy too.
First of all: I guess you probably shouldn't put this toy in a sanitizer (like you would use to sanitize baby bottles) that's how the forum mom melted her son's toy. So put that on the top of the "don't do this" list.
This is plastic and it is made in China but purports to be PVC and phaelate free. When it arrived it was very clean. I washed it off with a little soap and water to be safe but I am not too concerned about him sticking it in his mouth.
I gave this to our son when he was ten weeks old. He was able to grab it and hold it and eventually started passing it from one hand to the other and holding it up, sticking it in his mouth, playing with it with his feet. I think it makes a good first toy. It's light enough and soft/flexible enough he can't really hurt himself with it.
It's also really cute and reminds geek daddy a little bit of an atom or molecule.
Customer Review: This is my son's punching bag! Summary: 4 Stars
So I read all the other reviews and decided to take the plunge.I immediately expected my 4.5 month old son to love it and make it his best friend. No such luck. The first hour was spent angrily trying to swallow the toy and a whole bunch of frustration when he found out he couldn't.He blatted away and growled and generally bared his teeth (or lack thereof), whenever this was given to him.If he was peacefully resting, and you gave him the Winkel...hoo boy, all hell would break loose and yelling would ensue. He basically took out all his worries and frustrations on this poor little toy.In our house Winkel= Baby punching bag!
But things are better now.Matters have been discussed and olive branches extended from both sides. The Winkel had adopted a policy of trying to exist as unoffensively as possible and the boy has agreed to look past its general un-swallowability.There are occasional issues where the Winkel still gets flung out of the crib in disgust, but those are far and few between now.Peace reigns, but who know when that will change.
Customer Review: Boring but safe Summary: 3 Stars
I bought this (with a gift card--I might not have paid the price otherwise), but my kid never took to this toy and consistently refused it when teething in favor of water-filled teethers. It still looks like something that ought to appeal to a baby or toddler, but it was a total failure for us. The main point in its favor is safety. Your small baby won't clock herself the way she could with a wooden rattle or other hard toy, and there's no suffocation potential like you might have with a soft toy. Your toddler won't break a window or clock someone else if he likes it enough to throw it around. Of course, if your child has no interest in it at all, that doesn't matter anyway.
It can be hung from a stroller or bouncy seat with links, but it's too big for that to work out well. We bought this when our kid was less than 2 months old, and at no point in the baby or toddler stage was it a success. Maybe when the baby teeth fall out and the grown-up ones are coming in??
Customer Review: Great toy for high energy baby. Summary: 5 Stars
My daughter is three months and she simply loves this toy. She is my first child so naturally she gets lots of attention. I think playing with mom and dad so much causes her to be an uninterested in many toys. I would try to introduce rattles and teddies that she either slapped away or through down only after holding fro a few moments. Also she never reaches or had a good idea how to hold to things when she had the full weight of it. When I gave her this toy she grasped with ease and played with it for at least and hour before she got tired of it. She holds on to it when we pick her up and she started to hold it and other things with two hands. She is very active and moves around and semi crawls a lot. She drags the toy around with her and reaches for it when it's near by. Now she loves holding everything she can get her little hands around and while she's at play I can get things done around the house.
Customer Review: I dont usually review....period Summary: 5 Stars
We received this toy as a gift for our second baby and I wasn't particularly impressed. It seemed big and bulky and I just didn't see a baby play with it and so I went ahead and bought other rattles and teethers. My daughter is now 5 months old, which is a time when their attention span is not the longest as I see with all other toys that we offer her, ....but the Winkel. It is amazing how long she can play with it, grapple and fight with it. She moves it from hand to hand drops it and picks it up. She can do that because of those LOOPS. They are just perfect, thin enough so that she can grasp it, all around the central cube so that if she drops it any way she can pick it. Sometimes she doesn't even see it, but just feels for it and picks it up. The loops are pliable and she hits it often on her face and body as she manipulates it, but it doesn't seem to bother her. This is definitely on my list for gifting!
