Prior to being a stay at home mom, i was a pediatric occupational therapist - and sometimes it is hard to get the therapist seperated from the mom!
I bought his for our son several months ago, and was holding it until Christmas. Well, he got it about a month early when he was about three months old. I was noticing that he was trying to grasp objects, but his motor skills didn't enable him to turn his hands as needed to be successful. He was able to grasp this toy, because no matter how he oriented his hands there was a spot to grab. This was the first toy that he was really able to 'play' with. We save it for when he is sitting at the dinner table with us, since it holds his attention the best (he isn't eating solid food yet). I read reviews that said this toy did not hold their child's attention - all kids are different, and this is a different kind of toy. It does not light up. It does not make crazy noises (although it does make a nice rattling sound). It does not entertain a child while they sit staring. This is a toy that a child learns to entertain themself with.
If you want a toy that your kid can sit infront of and zone out for an hour, this isn't it.
Great, great toy! Also - made of wood and NOT PLASTIC!!! :) This means NO BPA and NO PHTHALATES - and therefore no endocrine disruptors!
