Toys and Games Reviews of Lionel Polar Express Train Set - G-GaugeCustomer Review: "All-aboard for the Polar Express..... and a World of Imagination" Summary: 5 Stars
Many years ago, my siblings and I had a Lionel train; we only set it out under the Christmas tree, and then put it away till the next year. I remember passing the train along to three nephews who, in turn, set it up and kept it out, year round. In either instance, we formed hills and snow-capped mountains under the tree, using crushed brown grocery bags colored over with crayons of different shades to resemble rocky formations, and glued with a light blanket of plastic snow. Under the tree, we placed sheets of cotton to replicate snow, over the bed sheet beneath, sometimes, placing small mirrors to resemble patches of ice. We played by the tree for hours, looking at the miniature houses and village that we meticulously set up so that the train passing through would feel at home in our little village.
In addition, there were miniature street lights, benches, fences, walk-over bridges, animals, trucks, wagons, all kinds of people, skaters and walkers, and cars to add adventure to our own little village. Many of the buildings were the old Plasticville units that we assembled and strategically placed around the tree; we even placed strings of lights in and through the buildings. I think we would have easily filled the entire room with the miniature pieces of a replicated town. We had dozens of trees and shrubs to place throughout our village, and each year, we would add a new building to our village, as funds were available; after all, we were just little children. I wonder, today, where that old Lionel train is, or if it's been recycled. I will never know.
But, I do know, today, that a new Lionel train is waiting to make its run to the home of two small children who have no idea, yet, what adventure lies ahead of them. This year, 2009, the Lionel Polar Express is waiting for its own adventure into the lives of these two young children. Quite possibly, they will take to it like "cookies and milk", or "fish in water", or "bunnies feasting on new blades of grass". Where will they put this train? Is there a room big enough to set it up so that they can retreat to this miniature world and spend hours of enjoyment dreaming of themselves being on the Polar Express, just like the little children in the movie of the same name. I wonder, too, if I will get to see them set it up and play with it, of course, with my movie camera ready to go. I'm waiting for the word from the parents that "it's full steam ahead" for the Polar Express to make its run to their house this Christmas.
The Polar Express is the name of the story (and eventual movie) by the author, Chris Van Allsburg. The story is all about "believing", believing inspite of all the complexities that exist today. The children in the story, each have their own challenges to meet; the young boy has his doubts, at first, but as the story moves along, he comes to believe in himself. This is symbolic for each of us; there is a time for everything, and there is a time for doubting and a time for believing. This story will give you inspiration to believe in yourself, whether you are 7 or 87, any age will do.
Consider bringing this symbol of childhood, immersed with faith in oneself, and hope in all that life has to offer. Buy a train for those special someones in your life, and get down on the floor with them in building their own little world. All aboard, and Merry Christmas.
This is one of Lionel's special editions that will probably bring back that "spirit of imagination" in the young and the old, whichever you are. Now is your chance to bring back some childhood playthings that will open up a world of adventure for your children, maybe even for yourself.
