I grew up with good quality alphabet blocks and had been looking for similar ones, but was disappointed to find only tiny, poor quality ones in every toy store I checked. Then a friend of ours gave our one year old daughter a set of Uncle Goose blocks. They were everything I remembered from when I was a kid. They are large enough to be a satisfying building toy, which is easily manipulated by small hands and yet large enough for someone with developing motor skills to still build a tall stable tower. They are made of a light wood with beveled edges which will not hurt the child when the tower inevitably falls down. Each block has a realistic, non-cutesy representation of an animal, a number or math symbol, and four distinct letters, resulting in several alphabets worth of letters in the set so that you can spell practically anything with them. Patterned embossing on two sides provide both textural and visual stimulation. It also preserves the integrity of the design over years of hard use. Great for hand-eye coordination, letter recognition, color sorting, pattern recognition, and developing an intuitive understanding of center of balance. Blocks are toys that invite children to find out what all can be done with them rather than merely discover what the designers intended to be done with them. And all without batteries.
Our blocks have gone through five children, and fifteen years after we got them they're still a favorite. The ink on some of the non-embossed block sides is beginning to fade on the edges, but it will hold up through several more children and several more decades.

Our classic set of 28 basswood alphabet blocks with a sturdy 7.5 oz cotton canvas drawstring bag. The bag is hand sewn here in Grand Rapids, MI and offers a convenient and durable storage container for when you're finished playing. Coated with the safest inks made, tested and re-tested!Like the alphabet blocks in Grandma's attic, these wooden blocks feature carved letters, fancy scroll borders, and simple ink drawings. Individual blocks feature four sides with colored letters, one side with a number and one side with the image and spelling of the object below it, such as an owl or duck. Unlike Grandma's blocks, however, these are printed with nontoxic, colored ink. And to avoid destroying nonrenewable forests, they're made of basswood that's cut from industry-owned and managed land in Michigan. Toddlers and preschoolers can use the 27 blocks to make all kinds of imaginative structures and to become familiar with numbers and letters.
