Bought this for my grandson who loves Lego's; generally he gets the kits and I thought it would be nice for him to have a variety of loose ones that he could have "free style" play with his younger brother and not get upset when the "instructions" weren't followed to the letter. He didn't seem very excited at first (likes the structure of the kits) but he and his little brother spent 5 hours on Sunday building a village, they had a blast! Nice variety of colors, sizes. I grew up playing with Legos and once my son turned 3 1/2 and started to out grow the Duplos, I gave him my Legos. The problems is my Legos lacked alot of the bigger blocks 2X4, 2X6 and 2X8s. I purchased, well actually Santa purchased, this one to grow his basic block set. This is the best one sold on Amazon as it throws in the useful sized blocks. Other large sets have a lot of 1X1 useless blocks. The smallest block you will get in this set is a 2X2 block. Plenty of 2x3 and 2X4 blocks in this set. This is a great set to start your kids off with basic Legos. Note that this set is only a block set. If you want wheels and people, you need look a different set. We bought two sets for our son for Christmas, and the total is perfect, and the best bang for your $. The bricks are all big and easy to build with and there are enough to build many buildings and anything your imagination thinks of. Also bought a set of plates to build on. Probably did not need the biggest 16x16 one--almost too big and does not fit into the box when we clean up.
We also bought a small star wars lego set, and had a starter set with a window or two, and were dismayed to see how tiny the sets were when disassembled (even though they had many pieces). The bricks are definitely the way to go. I was worried about lack of windows and doors, but they are not missed at all.

I admit it: I don't even have a child, I'm just a 20-year-old who really enjoys playing with Legos when I'm looking to procrastinate (which is to say, basically all the time...and I highly recommend it!). Having said that, on to the review...
This kit is ideal for those looking for a good assortment of pieces in a variety of colors and shapes, and there's a whole lot of them included as well (but, don't be surprised if you find yourself wanting to expand your collection indefinitely). The other great thing about this kit is that it's basically a "blank canvas" that has you rely on your imagination (rather than a themed set with a movie-tie).
In short, lots of fun!
Customer Review: Very Deceptive Photo of Product

All potential buyers should be wary of this product. An object should be placed next to this item so as to give a size perspective as well as a change of description. I received this item for my son and was very disappointed as to the actual size of the blocks themselves (extremely small). We have two sets of Legos already that are titled "Basic Bricks" and they are of the normal Lego block size.
The photo is very decpetive as to what the customer actually perceives that they are purchasing. Recommend purchasing from retail facility in person to verify actual size.
