When I told my older son's I was getting this for my 8 year old, they thought I should get one of the new Lego sets, you know like star wars... I can remember spending hours upon hours with my Lego's when I was a kid. We didn't have no 'sets'. We used our imagination. Not many toys let you do this today.
So I went ahead and got this for my son who has everything and he hasn't stopped playing with them yet. He spends hours putting together his own little Lego men (armies) and builds his little Lego tanks, planes and ships and battles all day. Sure, this isn't one of the fancy sets. You know, the kind kids play with and then stick on a shelf when they have completed it. You never complete this set. I continues on as long as you have imagination.
While, I am not putting down the sets. I just think toy manufactures have run out of ideas. But hey, lets get back to the basics and let our kids grow. This was one of the best gifts I have ever gotten my son and he has already used more than any other (except his gaming systems).
Oh, and my older sons... They can't keep their hands off of them.
You can't go wrong with this one.

We purchased this lego set and i must say I was chagrined when it arrived. It seemed ridiculously small for the price. We visited Denmark in 1976 and went to Legoland. While there we purchased a Lego set for about the same amount of money which contained ten or fifteen thousand pieces. No fancy pieces just the basic blocks and plates in many sizes. Our children used it for 7 or 8 years, then my wife took it to school to use in her second grade classroom for 25 years. Now my grandchildren have been using it for 6 years. We thought that the new set would be an exciting addition. It was hardly noticed among all the pieces, but from my long experience with kids and legos I loved the fact that the pieces were simple so that the kids can use them in a hundred different imaginative constructions. And there was enough variety among the pieces to help them find that one piece that would just fit for what they were trying to do. Finally, I found a gift for my eight-year-old great-nephew that he completely loves! The big pile of legos you see in the sales picture actually comes in many separate packages encased in a big plastic box with lid. I didn't know the plates come separate, but luckily he had some from another, much smaller box of legos he already had on hand. (If this is your first Legos purchase, you need to get some plates, necessary for stabilizing the created structures.)
I dropped off the box at 8 in the morning. When I returned at 1 pm, he had made two incredible structures with two of the plates. They were creative and aesthetic. I had no idea what could be done with legos. The limit is one's imagination, and legos challenge that. The fact that these legos do not come in pre-packaged creations (Star Wars themed figures, for example) make this box require the use of the mind and imagination, dexterity and coordination. I was impressed with what my nephew could do and will do.
Legos of the non-structured form come highly recommended! Just don't forget plates!

My almost 5-year-old daughter has developed a real interest in Legos, much to my delight (as both husband and I love playing with Legos ourselves:)) and this Lego basic bulk set was just perfect for our construction needs. There are only bricks in this set, about 576 pieces approximately, and it comes in a large blue rectangular tub for convenient storage. The colors are yellow, red, blue, white, black and green. I also plan on purchasing the basic plates, and the Lego people set to go along with this. All three of us have had such fun with these basic bricks, as we let our creativity dream up all sorts of constructions ( I mush prefer these loose sets than the themed ones actually). A great toy for creative play that encourages logical and abstract thinking too. Highly recommended.

This set of lego's surpassed what I was expecting! There is great building possibility and potential with this set. When you buy similar lego packages it states that you get ... say... 850 pieces. Most of those pieces are the little itty-bitty one (tiny 1/4" square) or two-piece (tiny 1/2" rectangle)lego's that are not that useful for building anything. This product has the bigger bricks so your child can actually BUILD something. I have searched and searched for a product like this and I could not even find it at the LEGO site! If you are looking for free play IE not buying a kit that only builds one thing, this is the one for you! This seller was great too. I had no problems and the order shipped quickly. Would buy from again.
