Toys and Games Reviews of Learning Resources Gears! Gears! Gears! Movin' Monkeys

Customer Review: This toy will be a classic!
Summary: 5 Stars

We bought this toy for our almost 4 yr old son for christmas this yr. He absolutely loves it and when asked which toy was his favorite christmas gift he said it was this set! He spends hours playing with it, my husband also enjoys playing with this set too, lol! In addition, I had also gotten an extra set of just a regular set of gear, gears, gears so my son could expand his set, which was a smart move. I fit both sets into a 27 qt sterilite container that I got at target, and it is the perfect size. Also, my 2.5 yr old loves this set too, although he isn't quite able to really build much on his own, but he does enjoy playing this toy with his older brother. The only thing about this set that surprised me is when the kids spin the gears the noise can be really LOUD! I guess I did not expect it, but basically it sounds like someone shaking a big box of legos with all their might in a plastic box when the kids turn the gears. Otherwise, the toy is great, totally worth the $. I forsee us expanding with more sets as the kids want to build even bigger sets.

Customer Review: Not as good as basic set
Summary: 2 Stars

I bought this toy for my 5 year old boy. He loves the basic gears set and loves to build things with it so I thought this would be great. I thought he would enjoy making the set larger and having the gears move something. Other reviews for it were good. However, when he opened it on Christmas morning it wasn't something he could just put together and make work himself. His dad had to sit down and help him put it together because there's only one way to make it all work right so you have to follow directions. It's not great for just being creative with like the basic set. So after you spend all that time setting it up, you crank the handle a few times and watch the monkeys go around and that's it. The kids lose interest pretty fast and then you either have to find a place to leave it out, or just put it away. It's not really something they can just get out and be creative with and then put away. I wish I would have spent my money on another basic set.

Customer Review: good toy for developing spatial sense
Summary: 5 Stars

When I was teaching elementary school science, I often pulled out sets of gears for my students to play with, because they are great for developing good science/math/engineering concepts, whether following diagrams or trying out their own designs.

We got this toy for my son for xmas, a month before his 3rd birthday. He's definitely ahead for his age with puzzles/ spatial challenges, and has loved this toy. At first, he wanted to build what the box showed, which involved following diagrams (definitely a mom/dad task) but now (a year later) he likes to play with it more open-endedly, hooking things together in his own way to make the monkeys move about. When we first got it, it looked like putting the parts together and taking them apart would be too hard for a 3 year old, but he can do it fine now as an older 3. My only complaint is that the box is not a great storage case.

Customer Review: Grandma's favorite
Summary: 5 Stars

As a grandma of 6 under 5 yr olds, I'm always looking for toys that keep them occupied and happy. Building sets have always been my favorites (Lincoln Logs, Tinker Toys, K'nex, etc). This looked different, but fun, so I tried it. Boy, am I glad I did! They love it! We did have to put together the whole big picture once, but after that they keep coming up with new ways to put it together to make the gears turn on the pads and in the trees. Although I can't speak about the longevity of the monkey gears since we haven't had it even a month yet, I can say that it is a favorite with me and with the grandchildren.

Customer Review: Great idea but parents have to do the work
Summary: 2 Stars

I bought this for my 4 year old who loves gears very much. We planned to read the instruction together and build it together. Then we found out right away that it is impossible for him to put together or take apart any "tree trunk" because you need to have a lot of muscle to do so. Sometimes I found it hard myself. He can put gears on once the frame work is set up. And he seems to enjoy spinning the gears. But if you plan to buy your kid a toy and hope he will go away and build it, forget it. This is not the one. Buy lego instead.
