It wasn't really clear to me from the pictures beforehand but this is an elevated arch which swoops down through a trap door. It is lots of fun and I've had no trouble with trains going through it even four trains linked together at the end of a roller-coaster hill. My three-year-old has thoroughly enjoyed this piece. He makes Thomas and Percy climb the hill, shoot through the tunnel, and escape to the other side. This is a nice accessory, which my 2.5 y/o son has really enjoyed. Our Thomas and Imaginarium trains have never gotten stuck in the trap door, which had been mentioned by other reviewers, and our trap door does open both ways, so we can reverse directions as desired. This is the best tunnel around - both my kiddos love it, the 1 year old will drop trains down it for hours on end. My 4 year old loves all things Thomas, and this tunnel is more "interesting" and functional than just the standard covered bridge/tunnels for close to the same price. I have not run into any engines (except perhaps Diesel 10) that will not go thru the tunnel smoothly.
