The first Thomas engine that I bought for my son was amazing. It moved pretty quickly, had no issues staying on the track, was extremely strong (it pushed chairs and other toys along the floor, most frequently if my son took it off the track it would push the whole track across the room to the wall), and put up with a lot of abuse (my son lets it run into the wall and make the gear grinding noise all the time, and also throws things including Thomas frequently). Unlike others I didn't see any problem with the battery usage. He uses it for a few hours a day, including stopping the motor on walls or on his hand, running it down the ramp of the Misty Island (take along thomas) set it isn't made for and getting it stuck in the tunnel or push the misty island set along the floor, etc, and I would only have to charge it once every week or two. The number on the bottom of this first one was 2319SK00.
Unfortunately, there was a limit to how much abuse this first Thomas could take. It still runs, but the grinding noise when you stop the wheels or force them comes much easier. After about 5 months, it started to have trouble going up any hills, including the one from his Thomas brand figure 8 set, and the grinding noise now happens when every time it goes up hill, even without pulling any other cars. I guess because the wheels are stopping easier or maybe some are stopping without others, it now derails much more often, both on curves and especially on hills (even straight hills). If it is pulling other cars, it now does wheelies when going up hill, with the front wheels going up in the air a few times going up each hill before it falls back and grinds a bit. The back wheels have very little power left to them.
To avoid a frustrated toddler with these issues, I bought a second one. The "new" one is numbered 2210SK00. (are these manufacturing weeks which would mean the newly purchased one is actually older?) The while it doesn't have the same tendency to grind, the new one is about half the speed of the old one, right out of the box. The tires on it are kind of wobbly, and I don't think they are uniform thickness all the way around the wheels or perfectly round. I suspect this is the reason it has traction problems, right from the start. It has almost as hard a time on hills brand new as his other Thomas engine does after all the abuse. It derails ALL THE TIME, sometimes even on straight track. Not good. I will probably end up returning this one, and hope I can get a replacement that works more like his old one. Or maybe I should order another from Amazon where we got the 1st one (the 2nd was from Toys R Us).
