Toys and Games Reviews of LeapFrog Text and LearnCustomer Review: Great learning toy and simple introduction to computer games Summary: 5 Stars
My daughter received this for her 3rd birthday and has enjoyed learning how to play the game, listen to the songs, and read the alphabet.
A couple of the main features that I like is the reinforcement of letters on the screen. As the child touches a letter it will say the letter a couple of times, make the sound, and say a word. The letter also shows up on the screen so they are seeing the letter as well as hearing the name.
I like the shape game as well, it teaches up, down, left, right or you can go by the colors. I like the idea that it is teaching the functionality of a computer game and how she can move the character up and down, left or right. I wasn't necessarily expecting this, but happy it's there. There are actually two games, for one of them it's helpful if your child already knows the alphabet. The other is shapes, so again, it's helpful if they already know these. You can look at it as a more advanced feature of the toy.
Customer Review: not so great Summary: 3 Stars
I read a couple of reviews and thought what a wonderful thing to get for my 3 and 5 yr old granddaughters. I received these and was impressed by the fact that they actually looked like real smartphones. I thought my girls were going to think these were the best thing since sliced bread. WRONG! The 5 yr old turned it on, took one look at the black and white graphics and gave it back to me. The 3 yr old actually tried to play with it. After about 5 min. she got tired of it and asked for her Nintendo DS. Whoever got the idea that a kid would actually like the black and white display obviously didn't do much research with the kids who would actually use these, especially kids that had advanced toys such as the Nintendo DS with it's beautiful interface/display. Oh, COLOR display I should say. What the heck is this black and white display? I returned these and got my $ back and bought the kids 2 new Nintendo games. They were thrilled.
Customer Review: Kids Love It! I would make a few changes Summary: 4 Stars
My girls adore this device! They love the games it had. Each letter makes a sound and has an animation. They think that's pretty neat! In fact that will keep them busy for a long period of time. Great for long car rides or drs visits. I think the letter sounds is a great overall feature, but it could use tweaking. Several of the sounds, sound alike causing confusion. I have had to correct my 3yr old a few times because the device really sounds like one letter when it should sound like another. Limitations, I know.
The device has great durability I will say! Between my 2 and 3 year old using it, it has withstood several mishaps and is still in great shape! I do wish there was a back light on the device, but for the most part that hasn't been a huge issue. I think it occurred to me once. Overall,I feel like my girls have learned from the device I just have to keep my ears open for some corrections.
Customer Review: Toddler learnt his ABCs by himself! Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this toy to keep my then 16month old son occupied on the long flight home. While he found it interesting, his attention span was not long enough to really benefit from using the toy. 3 months later he re-discovered the toy and it easily kept him amused on long car rides or during play time in the day. After a few weeks we realized that he had begun learning his ABCs from using the toy! He would repeatedly press one of the letters on the keypad, watch the animation, and repeat the name of the letter. Then he started to identify the same letters everywhere he went! While driving he would look out the window and say the letters he would see on store signs and other cars. In shops and restaurants he would identify them on posters and products. We did not think to start teaching ABCs so young but he did it on his own and now loves to discover the alphabet in the world around him.
Customer Review: A million percent recommend!!! Summary: 5 Stars
Im going to thank this toy for teaching my son his ABC's and in a week! He is very hyper activity and hates group activities or activities where hes expected to sit and focus or participate. So its been a struggle teaching him much. I got him this game on a whim and it was a huge hit. He loved the games, when he thought Scout was texting him, all the cute little animated graphics. I really didnt think he would like it because its not big and it doesnt have colorful animations, but he has to have this toy with him for about 90% of the day and its the only toy I dont mind him carrying everywhere with him. He can actually point out every letter of the alphabet now and not just in the game, in everyday situations. If we go out to eat he loves to read the letters on the menu now! Im definitely looking into the other leapfrog toys as well now.
