Toys and Games Reviews of LeapFrog® Tag Reading System (16 MB)Customer Review: Good educational toy Summary: 4 Stars
We bought the Tag for our son last year (he is now 6). He has not enjoyed it as much as I had hoped, but he has used it. (One problem could be that we misplaced it for about 3 months when we moved!) He tends to enjoy listening to the sounds/touching the pen to the pictures more than the words, so it has not helped his reading skills at all. And it isn't because my son does not enjoy reading, perhaps he just prefers to have a real life human read to him rather than an electronic pen. I do see the potential here for improved reading skills for children, it just has not been successful with my son at this point. Regardless, he has above age-level reading skills, so no harm done here. I have not used the Learning Path or whatever it is called to track progress. I can observe progress by watching him play with it or by having him read to me at night, so I don't need a "score." One limitation I would like to comment on is the limited memory. I think you can only store 5 books on the pen at a time. Fine for us, but may not be for some others.
Customer Review: My kids love it- I hope the company comes out with an upgraded reader with more memory Summary: 3 Stars
This is simply an awesome toy for teaching kids to read and have interest in books. My son takes his books with him where ever we go and he will sit for hours reading through the books. He loves the sound effects
However I do see some flaws with the system itself that I hope the company can address
1. the memory of the pen to hold audio's for the books is very limited. Therefor when my son wants to read all his books, I have to hook the reader up to the computer and swap audios. I think this is very annoying to do.
A simple solution for this would to make a reader pen that accepts memory sticks so you do not have to constantly swap out book audio.
2. I think a rechargeable battery would have been better than to have to constantly change the batteries.
The batteries die pretty quickly in the reader when used as much as my son uses his.
other than that this learning toy is really great. Hopefully an upgraded reader will come out soon
Customer Review: Excellent Toy! Summary: 5 Stars
We have owned a my first leappad, leappad, and a leapster and of all of these none have been played with as much as the Tag! My 3 year old loves it and her older brother of 6 steals it from her to "read" the books. So we will be getting another one very soon! But just so you know the Tag comes in pink also. My only option where I live was a green but thats ok. I would upgrade the memory thought, it can only hold 5 books. this Tag is so wonderful, I wont be suprised if I buy all the books that it works with. I believe the reason it only holds five is because only 5 books will fit in the carry case that you can get. But on the other hand you can play the stories without the books at anytime. (at least i think you can). this is a wonderful purchase and i totally do not regret it! We are a military family and when we move( as we do so often) the Tag will not be in the purged piles of junk we shead everytime, but our leappad and my first leappad will!
Customer Review: Great Idea Summary: 3 Stars
The Tag Reader is a really great idea, but needs some fine-tuning. Every time my young, impatient child wants to read a new story I should not have to wait through 20 minutes of updates, only to have the battery run out. The battery runs out very fast. Somehow it even ran out sitting unmoved in the closet for 3 months. When the battery is low, most of the remaining power is used up by the incessant "Time to change your battery!" message. When is it Not time to change my battery? Annoying! There is also a message about your "TAG Points & Rewards" every time you turn the pen on which isn't necessary. I know whether I've plugged it into the PC or not, and my toddler doesn't care. PS: Why not Mac compatible? Finally, how hard would it be to inscribe a little "TAG" emblem on the USB cable. Most of us have 10 or so and finding the right one takes ages. (I wrote in my own label.) Good toy; needs some improvement.
Customer Review: 4 yr old Inspired to Read..GREAT toy!! Summary: 5 Stars
My daughter adores this toy, and I love it too! There are many ways to play with the reading system so she is never bored. I love to play with her when she is using the Tag system. It's really great when it actually reads the story with the Characters' actual voices, cool music, and sounds. At this point she is recognizing words from the books and associating them with words she sees everywhere (i.e. cereal boxes, stores, signs). She is already an excelerated reader in her Class and this is just the tool to help encourage her and make it fun. Great for long trips..and I have to say even with the room for only 5 books at a time I think that is plenty. There are 3 levels of games on every page, and a story, and they can click on any picture for sounds. They can then go word by word and learn to read and recognize words on their own. Overall great toy! I recommend purchasing the whole system with the carrying case!
