Customer Review: LeapFrog screwed up a great idea
Summary: 2 Stars

This is a great idea, unfortunately LeapFrog doesn't seem to have a clue about teaching children. The fatal flaw is, each page has a button which reads the whole page. Once your child finds this, they will no longer bother touching the words, and suddenly the educational value drops to zero. Of course LeapFrog could easily disable this function, but they don't give you a way to do it. I will probably have to take a magic marker to the books to black out the button.

Another problem is the toy constantly tells the child to go online to unlock more features, so they can try to get you to spend more money - which means your child is constantly bugging you.

Another problem is, I might buy more books, but they put hardly any memory in these things - even though flash memory is so cheap now - so the only way to do that would be to delete the books I already downloaded. Then my daughter would want to read her old books, and I'd have to reload them - a very slow process. Therefore I will not be buying any more books. Really dumb move by LeapFrog not putting more memory in these things.

Finally just some nitpicking - the edges of the books are hard and very sharp. Another thing LeapFrog could have fixed if they had any kind of QA on their products.

Customer Review: Neat tool, lousy software
Summary: 4 Stars

The pen itself is a neat tool with good educational value. The software required to update it is really... detrimental to the experience of owning the pen. Consider this. I've already gone through the trouble of installing the software, creating an online account so that their marketing dept can send me whatever it wants, etc. I've loaded books I own and used it for six months or so. The pen only holds five books so I need to periodically use the software to load the books we currently use. Today I open up the program and it tells me it needs to install an update. I don't particularly want an update, but the only option is to install the update or not use the program. OK, so I select the "option" to update the program. It goes through its downloading, installing, etc and then tells me the program is now inproperly installed and that I should uninstall it and start again from the original cd. Thanks for the update! The program worked fine before the update, now it doesn't. So, rather than go back to the cd where I know it is just going to tell me that it then needs to update the program from the Internet, I downloaded and installed the current version from their website. An hour later I can now select the five books I want to use and my daughter has lost interest.

Customer Review: Love this!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I was real hesitant to buy this for my 4 year old son and 5 year old nephew. I couldn't decide if they'd like it or not or go with a Leapster. Costco had such a great offer I couldn't pass it up. We had our Christmas early and only gave it to my nephew and we are holding my son's back for our Christmas. They loved it! It was easy to download the books (though I suggest you do it before you give it to them) And simple to teach them to press the "buttons" on the page to make the page read. There's great comprehension questions (games to the kids) And the book has games and quizzes at the end but they don't know it!! My nephew picked it up really fast. It only holds up to 5 books but no worries about that yet. Its so portable I can't wait for my son to use it on trips etc. I like the carrying case. I could see where 3-4 year old may be rough with it but that's the age. My kids are usually pretty good about treating books carefully and the books seem heavier in weight that normal ones. Its great to see them pressing the pages to see what happens. Really brings them to life. I love reading with my boys but this is a great step for them to recognize words and the "order" of reading. I'm in love! I wish Leapfrog wouldn't have DC all their toddler/12-36 months Leappad books....

Customer Review: Love the Tag. Hate the lack of memory.
Summary: 4 Stars

We bought this for our 3-year-old (about 2 months shy of her 4th birthday) for Christmas, because she's bound and determined to learn to read. She LOVED it right off, and we had no problems getting the books downloaded, etc. Her little sister (just turned 2) was so intrigued that we ended up getting her one as well a few days after Christmas. It's wonderful toy, I love that it's not "screen time", and have already noticed a big jump in the number of words that she recognizes on sight.

My main complaint seems to be the same as everyone else's - its memory capacity is ridiculous. Given the price of memory these days, its small capacity seems nothing short of moronic. Not only does it limit the device's usability, but I'd think it was a bad, bad business move for Leapfrog. I do like this toy enough (and like that my children use it) to buy every book they sell, which I'd think is where their real profit potential lies, but I'll limit my purchases because I hate to even think about trying to manage which content is on which pen, and when. Never mind - the urgent requests to change content. It just seems silly, and I hope that they rectify it in the future.

Other than the memory issue, I really do love this toy as do my girls.

Customer Review: We Love the Leap Frog Tag!
Summary: 5 Stars

This product is awesome! I love it and so does my 4-year-old son. I really can't say enough good things about it.

My son enjoys using his "Magic Pen" every night to "read" his two books - Ozzie and Mack and Cars Tractor Tipping." Many nights, after I put him to bed, I will hear the pen talking to him and the characters of the book come alive. He reads these so much that he will tell me as soon as he turns the page "Oh, it's Frank!" ... or make the sound effects that the characters make before even placing the pen on the pictures. He also enjoys turning the pen on and just listening to the story without the book.

I really like having the ability to see his progress by going online and checking out his learning path. I can see which questions he answers correctly and how many he gets right. I can even see how long he uses the Tag books.

My son got this system for his birthday in July and the books and pen are still holding up wonderfully - with one exception of one ripped page.

We love this product so much I'm asking for more Tag books and the activity cards for Christmas! I'm super excited for him to get the "I Spy" book.

I would highly recommend this product.
