Toys and Games Reviews of LeapFrog® Tag Reading System (16 MB)

Customer Review: Wonderful tool for 5-year-old while parent is working on homework with older sibling
Summary: 5 Stars

Wonderful product. Would purchase again in a heartbeat.

In the last paragraph I discuss this product's only minus.

My 5-year-old calls Tag "superfun". I love that when I work with my older child doing homework my kindgartner can quietly work right beside us thanks to the headphone jack.

Not only does it "read" the book, it also makes interactive sounds when any picture on the page is touched.

The frustration level is kept to a minimum because my child cannot answer questions (play games) that are too advanced until she masters the lower level questions.

I receive emails from Leapfrog that tell me which books my child listens to the most; how long she played last week and which questions she tends to answer right. The emails also provide learning percentages.

My kindergartner adores when we hook her "Tag" to the computer and she earns prizes. Thus leading into the minus....

Only Minus - The tag "pen" can only be connected to one person so if I want to play or experiment or if my 7-year-old wants to play then my 5-year-olds "accomplishment" and "awards" go askew. Especially because my 5-year-old can't play every level right away. She must unlock various games by progressing and she really looks forward to the "prizes' when she unlocks new leves (printable bookmarks). So if I play or an older child plays we unlock levels she is not ready for and the learning emails become worthless and the prizes do not really reflect her accomplishments.

Customer Review: Great gift - according to a 3 year old
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this for my three year old niece as a gift and was concerned that among her plentiful supply of toys it might fall into the "boring, educational, stash-it-away-as-quickly-as-possible set". This was particularly true after reading reviews that implied it might be more appropriate for older kids. Gee, was I wrong! This was the hit of the Christmas season. And, it's still going strong as favorite toy a few months later!

My niece calls it her PS3 (a handheld computer game her 9-year old nephew plays religiously). Everytime he pulls his game out, she pulls out her leapfrog tag!

Despite her age, she was able to get through the first two levels of games on two of her favorite books that I gave with it, and is pretty close now on the third level. (Books were: LeapFrog® Tag Activity Storybook Disney/Pixar Cars: Tractor Tipping and LeapFrog® Tag Activity Storybook Disney Princess: Adventures Under the Sea. I'd recommend any Disney or Pixar activity book to stimulate their interest!.

I also gave theLeapFrog® Tag Storage Case, which I recommend. And, best of all for any family-member gift-giver - it is the gift you can build upon! For her birthday, I'm already planning other Tag books she's expressed interest in.

Customer Review: The Holy Grail
Summary: 5 Stars

There was an article about this toy before it came out in Wired Magazine. It basically interviewed the inventor and peaked my curiosity. So I purchased it. It is an impressive device by any modern day standards. Basically it's a camera that recognizes words and images on specialized paper (the limited series of books that you purchase). Once recognized it plays sound bites or reads the word(s) on the page that you are passing the pen over. It's smartly designed and a child quickly understands how to operate it.

At first it's a game and your child will just want to click on everything to hear the sound bites. As time goes by they start exploring the less than obvious features like read back and games. Before you know it you have a totally transfixed kid. It's great for a long drive and it certainly beats the pants off a dvd. I do believe that this device is positively contributing to my child's learning. I will say that the books vary in quality. I am writing reviews on most of them ; ) so you can follow along if you wish. To start with get Sponge Bob as it is the best of the bunch followed by Kung Fu Panda or Cars.

Last thought if you're still with me. This is a wonderful invention. I do recommend it especially for parent's that are looking for an alternative to TV. I just wish to caution that it is not a substitute for quality reading time with your child so make sure to read to them as well. Overall a great investment.

I hope this review helps.

Customer Review: Portable Fun, Easy to Use
Summary: 5 Stars

The Tag system is cool - it's easy and very portable, which is a big plus. You do need to hook it up to the computer and download the audio for the additional books (the one that comes with it is already installed), so this isn't something to buy for someone without Internet connectivity.

Pros: 1) Fun 2) Small 3) Easy to use 4) Portable and 5) educational.

Cons: 1) Storage only holds a handful of book 2) LeapFrog's website isn't fully able to handle holiday traffic, so while you can get audio for your new books, you can't download rewards and such which is a bit discouraging and 3) The suggested ages are 4-8, but I think the appeal is more likely 4-6 or maybe 3-6.

My son just turned 5 and is mildly on the autism spectrum. He loves repetition and loves being able to control the books and the audio. He has fine motor skill delays related to drawing and writing, so I thought this would be a good tool for him to use to gain some control without the frustration he feels with crayons and markers - he is able to control well enough to have Tag read the stories and he is able to play the games. This is a child who cannot draw a straight line or a good circle yet, nor any letters.

It has volume control, which is good. For others with ASD children, the lower volume seems okay for children who stim by putting speakers and sounds up to their ears. Vibrations from the machine are pretty minor, but it still seems to intrigue my son.

Customer Review: Another Good Leapster Learning Toy
Summary: 4 Stars

Our family loves Leapster products. We have the videos, the Leapster games, and the Tad and Lily dolls. We waited a while to buy the Tag system because it seemed too young for our older child (age 6, who is already reading) and our young child (age 4, and not yet interested in reading). Plus, it seemed rather expensive. Ultimately, we decided to buy one Tag system for them to share, in the hope that the Tag system would inspire the little guy to want to learn to read.

Both of our children have enjoyed the Tag books. They are very interactive, with lots of pictures that will 'talk' in a entertaining and animated way. There are even some very simple games embedded in the books. Most books end with some phonics lessons as well.

Though they have enjoyed the Tag books, they are not the favorites that the Leapster games have been. In addition, I am not yet convinced that either child is learning much. They certainly are not using the Tag pen to read or sound of individual words. Perhaps that will come in the weeks ahead. (We have owned the system for about two weeks).

Fortunately, we have not had any technical difficulties with loading books into the pen. The whole process took us about 5 or 10 minutes.

The T-Rex and Ben 10 books have been the most popular with the four-year-old boy. The Ben 10 book has a comic book feel to it. Most of the other books that we have bought are in a more traditional format.
