Toys and Games Reviews of LeapFrog Read and Sing Little LeapCustomer Review: Big Leap Frog fan, but this one is so-so. Summary: 3 Stars
I've had this toy for over two years now. It was a b-day gift for my then 2 yr old. I now have 3 and 4 yr old boys. This frog is seldomly played with and I'm not sure why. I feel that this toy is too loud-mine has no volume control, I'd recommend checking whether current models have a volume control. The sound quality is rather nasal like and somewhat unclear. I have difficulty recognizing similar sounding letters sometimes(B,D,E,T; M,N; C,Z-you get the idea). I think clear pronounciation of letters is very important for little ones trying to learn them. I also feel that the "squares" that each letter are asigned to lead childern to easily mispress. This can lead to much confusion. Your child may know the correct letter that he or she wanted to press, but easily engages a different letter. This toy has a lot of teaching/learning potential, but I think it's lost in the muddle of actually using it. I would strongly recommend following the age range of 2-5 for this toy. The controlled fine motor skill required to work this toy coupled with the attention and listening skills to actively participate with the frogs' directions will probably aggravate toddlers who are not developmentally ready.
Customer Review: Fun/educational for the short time it works Summary: 2 Stars
We purchased this Little Leap 2 years ago and used it very little until now. It would be a great educational toy if it worked properly. After only a few uses, the buttons around the edges of the "keypad" stopped working and some of the other buttons said the wrong letter when pushed. How confusing for someone trying to learn their letters or phonics! I called the company and they suggested changing the batteries (I already had) and cleaning the battery connections with alcohol (I did and no improvement). They said if I would send it and $20 to them, they would replace it. They called this their 50% guarantee. If you have looked at Amazon's price, it is $29.99. I asked how $20 equalled 50% off. They said 1/2 of $30 is $15 plus $5 shipping and handling! (This is on top of my cost to ship it to them!)
I have read in reviews of other Little Leap products that the company does not stand behind their products. Now I know that is true! My sons have enjoyed all their products that we have purchased, but I will never purchase or request another one now that I know they DO NOT STAND BEHIND THEIR PRODUCTS!!!
Do not buy this product!
Customer Review: Kids like this toy Summary: 4 Stars
I havem mixed feelings regarding this toy. First the positive: First it is educational. It provides the letters, phonic sounds and numbers. It also has the double sounds of the vowels. It has games that you can play that reinforce the learning. It is very cute. It sings songs. Both of my older children (age 4 and 2) enjoy this toy. It turns itself off with no use. This toy is really not very loud. The not so positive: It is not the clearest voice and sometimes I have a hard time understanding the letters. My son does not though. It also takes very little for it to come on, if you just bump one of the litle buttons, it comes on. I'd say overall, that this is a quality toy that lives up to the Leap Frog name. I look for toys that are fun and easy to play with. I look for toys that have more than a button to push to make a sound. I look for toys that are not too loud. I look for toys that encourage exploration of the world and encourage creativity. Although this toy does not meet all of these requirements, it is a fun toy. It is one I would probably buy again. Enjoy.
Customer Review: can's say enough for Little leap! Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this for my son for his 2nd birthday. He slept with it every night for months and often still does over a year later. He quickly began to recognize all the capital letters and knows their phonics. Now at 3 he's sounding out words and putting combos of letters together and sounding them out. He usually has to go through the song to figure out the sound if he's unfamilar with the letter which is OK. I'd rather him not though. I have one problem with it. The alphabet song stops so he can put in the missing letter. I think their should be 2 modes for this one to fill in the missing letter and the other to sing the song intirely. My son got very frustrated at 2 with the song stopping. It can't teach them their ABCs that way either. All in all it's a great toy. I love the leap frog line. I feel leap frog gave him that extra push to learn the things he will need to know. Of course as with all learning toys it's no good if someone doesn't sit down and enforce what it's teaching.
Customer Review: Taught my toddler the alphabet Summary: 4 Stars
My in-laws gave this toy to my son for Christmas when he was 19 months old. I thought he was a little young, but he did enjoy pushing all the buttons and making the frog sing.To my amazement, this toy taught him all the letters of the alphabet well before he turned 2. After just a few months of playing with this toy, he could correctly point to any letter I named ("Where is X") and correctly name any letter I pointed to ("What is this?"). The song to teach each letter is the same, so to an adult the singing is rather repetitious. But this doesn't seem to bother children. After several months of play, a couple of the letters became hard to push, but that bothered me more than it did my son. I was impressed with how effectively an electronic toy could teach such a young child. I never set out to teach my son the alphabet so early, he learned it all on his own by interacting with this toy.
