Toys and Games Reviews of LeapFrog Learning Drum

Customer Review: Like it, but...
Summary: 4 Stars

My daughter started playing with this toy when she was about 6 months old. She's now 9 months and continues to love banging on it. Unfortunately, the toy "shuts down" after what I consider a too-short period of time. To get it going again, I have to switch it off, then switch it back on again. She is way too young to figure this out. If she is distracted for just a few seconds with something else, the toy will "talk" to her a few times then say "Thanks for playing with LeapFrog, bye-bye". From that moment the toy is useless unless I do the on/off thing. It would be better if it would go into "sleep mode" and then as soon as she hit it again, it would come back on.

One plus that I do like is that she will often turn it upside down and hit the bottom, it still works!

Customer Review: My Daughters Favorite Toy
Summary: 5 Stars

When my 6 month old daughter got this toy for Christmas from her uncle, we really didn't think it looked any different than the other 500 battery operated toys she got.Boy, were we wrong!Skylar looooves this toy. When she hits the drum(banging things seems to be the favorite amusement for most babies this age)each letter from A-Z or numbers 1-10,depending on the setting, show up in red lights and is yelled out by a child's voice, each time it is hit. This teaches her cause and effect, and also, the alphabet and numbers visually and vocally. This toy also has 2 more settings for instrumental sounds,so a child can experience playing their own drum.Cute childrens' voices provide songs and words of encouragement when your little one is drumming away.A really interactive, educational, and entertaining gem of a toy!

Customer Review: Hit the Drum its fun!
Summary: 5 Stars

This Drum is wonderful! I took my son (9mths at the time) to a play group and he went straight for one of those drums that have the mallets attatched to it....so I thought it would be a great xmas present. While in search for one of those I ran across this one....when he opened it up for xmas all he wanted to do is bang on it!!!! Now almost a year old my son actually has a bit of rythym!

It has an alphabet mode for when you hit the drum it says a letter of the alphabet. Also a counting 1-10 mode. Both of those modes have different "background" music! There is a mode that allows the child to play the drum or to repeat the sound. The last mode is my favorite...children sing a verse then you hit the drum and it plays the music!!!

WONDERFUL INVESTMENT!!! Babys got rythym!

Customer Review: great learning toy... fun too!
Summary: 5 Stars

My 1 year old LOVES this toy. There are 4 different settings. The first is ABC's. Each time that baby beats the drum, the letter is called out and displays digitally on the top of the drum. The second setting is numbers, where baby can hear and see counting as he beats the drum. The third setting is rhythm. Beating the drum will activate drum sounds along with encouraging comments "You sound great!". The fourth setting is music - each beat of the drum activates musical sounds. This is truly a wonderful toy. And, unlike some other toys, you don't have to hit the drum hard and even little hands and soft taps can elicit the sounds and lights.
This toy is lots of fun, very interactive, and will certainly grow with our son. We even went out and bought one as a gift for a friend.

Customer Review: I love this toy much more than my son!
Summary: 4 Stars

My son received this toy as a gift at a very young age. I loved the idea of teaching him sounds, numbers and music.

I loved the clever placement of the music/number/options selector, etc. This is a well-designed toy. I loved the light display, too, which makes this a great evening/car toy too. The volume was just right.

My son is now over two and now outside the recommended range. I was hoping to help him learn his numbers with this toy; now it may be too late. He just never enjoyed this toy, and he ordinarily loves toys with music and pounding.

I took his fun rating -- 3 -- and my fun rating -- 5 -- to come up with four stars for fun.

Updated 2005: My son is now 3, almost 4, and now loves this toy. I'm glad I didn't give it away.
